Question about Mtd 22" Yard Machine Push Mower

Hi/low idle I have a MTD 21" 4 hp push mower which is running a little funny now with a hi/low idling. It never stalls just a rhythmatic hi/low idle. I have changed the spark plug, air filter and oil. I did notice that just before the fuel tank runs empty,(about 30 seconds) the idle smooths out. Any suggestion?

    yes. A briggs and Stratton engine with rectangular fuel tank with varb/air filter on top.

    Hi Dwain. The governor spring and tab looked fine. The tab is fixed so no problem there. I picked up the diaphragm kit you mentioned and installed kit, cleaned screen on the pick up. Now she's purring like a kitten. Thanks for your help. I greatly apprieciate it.

    It's not the governor spring, rather a fuel delivery problem. Do you plan on trying to fix this yourself. If so, I can tell you what to do. Let me know. Dwain

    Is you engine a Briggs and Stratton and have a rectangular fuel tank on the side with the carb and air filter sitting on top of it?

    Replaced oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, and spark plug. It wouldn't run smoothly, so I put the old spark plug back in, same problem. Thoughts?

Ok. First do one thing. Remove the air cleaner and start the engine. With your finger, push against the side of the governor spring to raise the rpm's some and hold it there. Is the 'hunting' still there? The tab the spring is attached to adjusts the governor speed and being located where it is, is prone to being bumped while mowing, pushed in and lowering the engine speed. If it still surges, this is what I would do... Remove the fuel tank and carb assy.. Two bolts, one behind the gas cap and one on the end of the tank. Pull it straight off the intake pipe then unhook it from the throttle link. Now, empty the tank and unscrew the carb from the tank. Clean the carb with a can of carb cleaner. Slip the screen off the pickup and make sure it's clean. Discard the pump diaphragm and gasket. Buy a new pump diaphragm kit, part #795083. Clean the top of the tank where the pickup with the screen fits into. Put it back together. Remember to put the rubber diaphragm against the tank and the gasket on top of it then the carb. Don't forget to attach the breather tube when you're putting it back on the engine. That should fix 'er up. Also, if the rubber ring and plastic retainer ring came off on the intake pipe when you pulled the carb and tank off, snap them back in the end of the carb before sliding it back on the intake. Hope you can make sense of all this. Let me know how it goes. Dwain

I have a yard machine by mtd 3.5 hp. start no problem and motor stays running till i push some snow motor stalls. even small amount of snow . it seem any load to the motor stalls it out


Hi, Check for weak spark. You may need to replace magnedo or clean it up abit. Another thing clean out carbereter jets this could be the main reason why it stalls.

There will be a small screw near the carb with a spring around it.That is the idle screw.Turn it left to increase the speed.

heres a few things to check, make sure that the oil is not over filled, you might have bad fuel,, and check the spark plugs on both to make sure they aren't fouled by fuel, if so,, clean the plug and regap them,

Generally this indicates a "lean" condition in the carburetor and there are no adjustments. Depending on your abilities, the best fix is to remove the carburetor and clean all the metering passages/jets. In some cases you are better off just replacing the carburetor. I have seen some Honda carbs. as low as $15-$20. Hope this helps to some degree.

sounds like its out off adjustment unhook the throttle push the handel all the way to the choke spot then pull the cable untill you see it close the chok on the engine then titen it up let me know if this works and if it dont or if you need any thing eles let me know

Mtd 22" low idling how do I correct the problem?


if this has a briggs & stratton engine on it, then the idling is set thru a spring on top of the carberator. some units have an idle set screw also. if it has an idle set screw, turn it in untill it idles where you want it to, if it just has a spring, then replace the spring.

Guessing you have a briggs and stratton motor with a tank mounted carb.Remove the tank and carb. from the mower and replace the rubber diaphram between the carb. and tank and clean it while its off

My mtd tradesman lawn mower does not run smooth. where is the idle mixture adj. screw? the engine is the tecumseh 5.5 hp model #VLV55 501029A(D)


The newer machines do not have a way for you to adjust the Idle, what you can do is change the spark plug or spray some carb cleaner or remove the air filter and run it for a few minutes without the air filter and see what happens
