Question about Maytag JMC9158AA Microwave Oven

1 Answer

The jcm9158aa jenn air microwave cooks fine, but the fan and light do not turn off when the microwaving is complete. In order for the fan and light to turn off, you have to open the door or turn off the circuit breaker.

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If the switch mount is broken, it's usually more economical and safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

Hey David... sorry to say

There's a $14 fuse between cooking & your magnetron (could be other things (but in my opinion... magnetrons sound right for your symptoms)

I checked for your magnetron

I LOOKED at your oven and it is a really nice one...

So I think I'd be hitting all the on-line parts houses

The problem is caused by one of three things, the magnetron "heats food" the high voltage diode "sometimes shorts" or the high voltage capacitor " shorts"

Jenn Aire microwave oven combo, microwave has gone out. Will cost almost as much to have repairman check it out as it would to replace with a smaller microwave. We have not been able to find a comprable...

The fan can be the fan itself, the sensor or the controller. If you can find the right repair shop it would be worth fixing. The problem is finding that shop. Generally as you have found out it is cheaper just to replace.

Best advice I can give is just to call as many repair shops as you can and get a estimate. I know that the obvious thing but really unless you get in touch with "the right shop" they will charge too much to make it worth fixing. Most shops do the board replace routine. They will narrow it down to a board instead of replacing a 50 cent part. Thats really the problem.

Where is the Triac & what does it look like?

A triac is a bidirectional switching device which in older model microwave ovens is used to regulate the AC input power to the high voltage section to turn the cooking power off and on and to set the cooking power.

Depending on the model, they would most commonly be located on or near the control circuit board or on the chassis floor of the oven.

They may look like one of those in the attached photo.

I always recommend that folks use the vent / hood fan anytime they're cooking with the stove.

Was it on at the time?

If not, moisture can certainly get into the works and cause problems or damage. If it dries out, it's fine but if not, it could cause damage.

Microwave stopped working completely

Fan turned on after cooking because a thermostat got to hot and tripped turning on the fan to try to cool the unit.  The unit went completely dead when thermal fuse tripped which is located above the cavity on the left side.
