It probably need oiling. The fan motor should be oiled at least every two months. For complete cleaning instructions (including oiling) e-mail to miller@healthyti.com. Ask for their free cleaning instructions. They will be glad to help.

How do I fix the noise?

let it dry completely, disassemble as you would for cleaning, and remove filter unit. Inspect to make sure no paper or other debris like a seal has been dislodged. If you can see fan blade, see if it will turn with filter removed. If it moves easily, reassemble carefully and make sure the contacts are oriented correctly and any charcoal filter is on place as well. Try unit.

If noise persists, the unit has to be opened up to inspect bearings of fan/motor and to locate and remove any debris. At that time a drop of light sewing machine oil or pellet gun oil to lubricate the bearings is a good idea.

How do I know when it is time to service my Living Air 880?

This is one of the first models manufactured by Alpine, and is at least 15 years old. It's pretty basic, however, and if it's maintained monthly or bi-monthly, it probably will just keep on going and going...like another little advertising icon says!
The two most important parts are the white plates with the screens attached, and the fan. If the machine is making strange squeeking or grinding noises, the fan needs oiling. Even if no noise is audible, the fan still needs oiling occasionally, like any fan in any appliance.
To:oil:
1) Unplug the machine.
Remove the front grid, gently but firmly pull off the fan blades, and

Sounds like the fan is making a loud noise

Probably all you need to do is oil the shaft. Remove the front grid, firmly but carefully pull off the fan blades, and use a thin household oil to penetrate down the shaft. Turn the shaft and repeat the turning until it loosens up. If that doesn't solve the problem, get in touch with us at fredandmb@frontier.com. We've been with the company 20+ years.

Fan Noise

Your fan motor probably needs additional maintenance, in the way of lubrication.

After removing the unit from power, access the Fan blade and spin with finger. If there is any resistance to note then the spindle running through 2 bearing surfaces needs lubrication.

See the other question/answer to fan removal - motor lube.

If you have any sort of humidity to contend with and have a FreshAir model F1 or earlier different type, they seem to have some corrosion problems after a period of a couple years.

It is just a function of the machine/job that necessitates such maintenance.
