SOURCE: GE Microwave DEMO MODE

I just bought a condo with a GE Spacemaker Mod# JVM1860SD
that was stuck in demo mode. (This mod# has been replaced by the JVM1870*** series)

I called GE twice in two days, and finally got someone who had the solution (and it worked):

  1. Unplug the unit for at least 30 seconds
  2. Plug the unit back in DO NOT SET THE CLOCK
  3. While the unit is still "booting up" and the display screen is lit with gibberish, HOLD THE POWER LEVEL AND THE ZERO BUTTON for at least 5 seconds.
  4. After 5 seconds, the screen will display "demo mode off"
It messed me up at first because the power level and zero pads don't beep when the unit is booting up... but it worked.
- Again, this is for the GE Spacemaker 1860-1870 series models only - The women who gave me instructions said she had different demo mode unlock methods for the 1400, 3670, 2070 etc... so call GE if you have a different model.
P.S. my model looks like this - the keypad setup is key http://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SPECPAGE&SKU=JVM1870SK&SITEID=GEA

Thanks for the opportunity to help! To see if this fault can be cleared, do the following:

  1. If your unit is plugged into an *outlet (most times, this is located over your microwave in small cupboards).
  2. If it is, unplug the cord and wait about 30 seconds.
  3. Plug your microwave back in and see if the panel now works.
  4. Go through all the initial setups such as setting the time.
  5. If the fault does not reappear, then you are good to go. If the fault reappears, you will have to call service or replace the product.
*If your unit is hardwired, find the circuit breaker and turn it off for 30 seconds, then turn the power back on.

DEMO MODE ON/OFF
Demo mode is designed for retail store display. In this mode, the oven can be demonstrated with no power in the oven.

On the "Timer/Clock: button:

4 taps ON The oven is in Demo mode.

4 more taps OFF The oven is not in Demo mode.

When there is no heat, but everything else seems to work, it means the magnetron circuit has failed. The magetron is the part the generates the microwaves that heat the food. When it fails, it makes a loud buzzing sound. The replacement part can cost as much as a new oven, so it not worth fixing. Get yourself a new oven.

Stuck in demo mode after power outage - any ideas on how to get it out? model is JVM2070

Talked to GE Help Line (1-800-626-2005) and found out the magic key combination for this microwave. Plug in after being unplugged for at least 30 sec. and then press Help plus Boost at same time for 3-4 seconds (until it beeps). The microwave will now be in normal mode (I assume you do this to put it in demo mode as well).

My problem is "how do I turn off the demo mode on a GE Advantium 120 Microwave/Oven Combo?

Press OFF 5 times to exit store demo mode.

There are different ways for each unit.... please reply with the model # if that does not work for you.

Can't get Demo Mode Off

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for maybe an hour.

Otherwise, you might see if this is addressed in your owner's manual.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Demo Mode

Unplug the microwave for at least 3 minutes, then plug it back in, and BEFORE SETTING THE CLOCK, press and hold power level and start for three seconds. This should flash "demo mode off". Set the clock as normal. Enjoy!
