Question about NEC Lands Phones

I have a dead extension that doesn't give a tone when I lift the receiver. The system was switched off and the socket was moved and then rewired exactly as before. Any ideas?

Have lost the dial tone on my phone although the line seems to be ok as the internet still works.

You are right to surmise the line is still OK - at least at some level.

Internet and phone services are separate, sharing only the physical copper wire. Assuming the phone service has not been cut off (bills all paid? ) you may have what was (maybe still is) called an "intact line fault". This is usually a partial short to ground that prevents the phone working normally, but often is sufficiently high impedance to let internet still work.

Is there any noise on the phone line other than dial tone? Do you still get side-tone (some audio that seems to come from the earpiece when you speak) or does the earpiece seem totally dead acoustically? If dead the fault is likely in the handset and/or cable and/or connection.Try a different phone handset and cable to eliminate the handset being at fault?

Is it possible the wiring to the internet socket is OK, but there is a cable fault in your house to the phone socket - assuming they are on different sockets?

What happens if you plug the phone into the internet socket temporarily?

What about changing your ADSL filter?

DON'T try to do any checks with a cordless set up - use a real phone for testing.

If you have a multimeter, take the cover off your phone socket* and put the probes on the line with the meter on around the 100volt scale. You should get 50volts DC with the phone on-hook, and around 6 to 12 volts DC with it off hook.

With all phone/phones disconnected, is there any DC voltage on the internet socket?

*Not all modern sockets have covers - the newer standard is the RJ6 socket where the connections are harder to get at.

CAVEAT: I am in Australia. If you are from elsewhere your line voltages and socket standards may vary.

I'm looking to rotate phones around the office so that they can remain with their employee. Basically, I want to plug in the original phones to another line and reprogram for the original extension with...

In my workplace, when you move the Nortel M7100 phone, the programmed info (extension number, etc) moves along, just like if I was rewiring all phones. Have you tried just to unplug the phone and plug it on the new location? Here the extension number moves along with the equipment... (Nortel Norstar M7208 and M7100). Good Luck!

Semi Dead Panasonic KX-TGA100N with ''C533'' displayed.

Panasonic KX-TG1050N Cordless Phone. Base handset (No. 1, KX-TGA100N) does not work, no keypad response or dial tone. Green indicator message light ON (should only work with the TG1000N base unit) all the time till battery runs down. Display shows message ?C533?. Can still send and receive calls on extension phones 2 and 3.

Fax nightmare!!!

If you have a BT line and use the 1571 answering facility , when you have a message waiting the dialling tone changes from a constant tone to a split tone. This is to let you know that you have one or more messages waiting.

In order to get the dialling tone to revert to the constant tone you have to deal with the waiting messages in accordance with the options provided i.e Save, Listen Again or Delete. BT say the Split Tone is to let subscribers know when they have a message waiting. This should resolve the Fax problem.

It certainly worked for my phone/fax system.

Good Luck

Problem with fax and phone

Make sure phone line goes to correct socket into fax ie into line not phone or ext. sockets.

Off hook means receiver is lifted from cradle, should vanish when you put phone down.

Connect normal phone to same place you are trying to plug fax into I bet it is engaged too, if so it because you have a phone line problem, call carrier.
