Try reseating your memory in each slot one stick at a time and after each stick reinsertion turn on the laptop to see if you get any video.

If you don't then take out the hard drive and the cd drive. If you still don't get any video then the motherboard is bad.

My laptop was left a my dads for a few months and it worked before and now it has a black screen, nothing comes up and i dont want to buy a new one right now.Every little piece of information helps!!

Sounds like a broken inverter which allows the screen to have backlight so you can see everything. But in stating that it could also be cpu or mainboard problem as they would also cause black screen with power.

My IBM T40 boots to a black screen with the "z"(light at top to right of power.

Try these steps:

1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter
2. Press power on button for 30 seconds or so (one min is also too)
3. Attach battery and plug into wall
4. Power "ON" as normal

If you are still getting the "Z" and a black screen then I would have the video card or hard drive looked at and replaced. Start with the video card and then look at the hard drive

Will not boot... black screen?

Try removing the battery completely and powering it up on AC power. Sometimes a dead battery (even if you're plugged in to AC) will stall a boot-up in its tracks. If this doesn't help, please reply back and let me know if anything changed.

T30 Intermittent Booting Problems - Depending on screen angle

It is issue with the screen cable connection. Replace it. or it is getting chaffed and causing issue in proper signal and power to the screen. It is hardware issue.
