I might be posting this message too late but if you're under warranty I would call Sony and have them replace the fan/heat sink unit. The guy that came out and replaced mine (model VGN-CS190) said that Sony was aware of the fan problems. Either the fans they're selling in these things are bad, or the design of the lap top doesn't allow adequate air flow and the fans are running till they fall off the bearings.

They'll cover the cost of shipping and repair if you go through them. The laptop has a recall to replace this part in all these machines.

  • cokeinacan Jun 21, 2014

Sony paid for shipping and repair costs. The part was covered, and a recall was put into effect on all of these machines. The part is defective.

I have VGN CS laptop. I just bought my laptop last Nov. Two months after, weird noise started to appear, sounds like lawn mower. I tried to search some solutions and even contacted Sony Service Centers and online support, to be honest, they are all lazy to address the problem-they sucks.

Just last night, i deliberately open my laptop (back side)and thank god i found a solution.

I put a small piece of ducktape on the heat sink where the screwed "spring type metal (not spiral)" touches the heat sink when cover is put in place. My theory is, when the fan spins in a max speed, it somehow creates vibrating and creaky sound due to "spring type metal" touching the heat sink that somehow disturbed by fan at work - metal to metal.

I tried to open applications to make the CPU work at 80 - 90%, sounds seem to be minimized. and right now, having video chatting and watching a movie in my laptop, noise has gone.

Found a link in YuoTube on how to open VGN CS...

Clean the fan from any dust "use Air Duster Cans", this is one problem that is easy to fix. Another if it continues, then lub it up. But 9 times out of 10 your labtop fan kicks on to cool the system down so it doesn't short out. You can goto Wal-Mart or Best Buy and get a Cooling Fan plate for your labtop and just set under the labtop to cool it. They range to about 30 to 40 bucks, but it's worth it.

My laptop fan is making big noises ,my laptop model is sony vaio vgn-cs190,what should i do replace it or any suggestions.please let me know

If it sounds like a plastic helicopter, them you have a problem with the heat (which probably melted the area around the fan, not the fan itself) that comes from leaving it on a non-hard surface. You should never have it on a bed or blanket or carpet for more than 10 min. But anyways, you will either want to take it to a repair shop (don't let them **** you around though, make sure THEY know that YOU know that it's only 15 minutes of work to fix) or you can go buy a new one. I had the same problem with a Compaq that had dual processors. I could practically cook an egg with it, but i actually ended up having to cut and reshape the ports for the heat to escape better (and to make the helicopter noise stop). So if you have ANY know-how at all and can do it yourself, or you husband, son, wife maybe? just guessing here... Anyway what i was trying to say is it would be about 10 times cheaper to have someone fix it unprofessionally. But that is only if it's making the helicopter noise. I really should have had you clarify before i started typing i guess.

Im having Sony Vaio VGN Serires laptop. Laptop was working well for more than 2 years but in from the last few months the laptop shutsdown automatically (mostly while playing movies). the laptop is...

this is a heat problem. try blowing the fan vent and all opening with air. a air compressor does this well. if you don't have one you can buy dust remove in a can.(same thing but compressed air in a can) they also sell a fan plate you can put under the laptop at walmart. (around 15 dollars) i use one on my laptop. i used Velcro to keep together. the fan plate uses a usb port to power it on. hope this helps and please rate. thank you.

My laptop (sony vaio VGN-CS325J) fan makes a horrible noise

Hi kufreudokang,

The VGN-CS1xx, VGN-CS2xx, VGN-CS3xx computer models have a known issue that the cooling fan in the Computer may make continuous scraping, whirring, chriping and/or clicking noise while running. As a part of Sony's commitment to quality, Sony provides a free repair for an additional 36 months beyond the standard limited 12 month warranty (48 months total) for fan replacement.

As you're experiencing the issue, you can contact Sony Support at 1-888-476-6972 to set up a repair service at our Sony repair facility.
Hope this helps.

Please post back if you require further assistance.

Thanks for using FixYa.

It seems that the CPU cooling fan is defective. Since you just bought the laptop before 5 months, I assume it is still covered by warranty.

Sony Vaio fan making noise

Hi:
Not sure of a user cause for the fan to run full speed, unless you are using the laptop in a high heat environment, or setting it on a bed or other area where it is not getting adequet cooling air. If it does it right away, when you turn it on , cold, then there might be a laptop hardware problem. If you leave your laptop on all the time, then you might be inducing the problem. I had a HP high performance laptop, that the fans would not turn on at all till it ran an hour or so, then they would stay on loud for 10 or 15 minutes, then shut off, then cycle.

Loud fan noise

The fan noise has two reasons: one is that ice forms around them causing strain on the disk brush in the middle, which wares down the brush causing the fan to go out of balance, this causing the loud whinning and sometimes high pitched squilling. This happens when the unit is six months to a year old. The first thing that is suggested by the manufacturer is to let the unit be unplugged for twenty-four hours, allowing the ice to melt from around the fans. It has been my experience that this is only a short term fix. You can repeat this every other month until the revolutions per minute of the fans is so reduced that they no longer supply enough air ciculation to cool the refrigerator or the freezer. The solution to this problem is to replace these fans about once a year. Unless the noise does not bother you.
