Question about Computers & Internet
I might be posting this message too late but if you're under warranty I would call Sony and have them replace the fan/heat sink unit. The guy that came out and replaced mine (model VGN-CS190) said that Sony was aware of the fan problems. Either the fans they're selling in these things are bad, or the design of the lap top doesn't allow adequate air flow and the fans are running till they fall off the bearings.

I have VGN CS laptop. I just bought my laptop last Nov. Two months after, weird noise started to appear, sounds like lawn mower. I tried to search some solutions and even contacted Sony Service Centers and online support, to be honest, they are all lazy to address the problem-they sucks.
Just last night, i deliberately open my laptop (back side)and thank god i found a solution.
I put a small piece of ducktape on the heat sink where the screwed "spring type metal (not spiral)" touches the heat sink when cover is put in place. My theory is, when the fan spins in a max speed, it somehow creates vibrating and creaky sound due to "spring type metal" touching the heat sink that somehow disturbed by fan at work - metal to metal.
I tried to open applications to make the CPU work at 80 - 90%, sounds seem to be minimized. and right now, having video chatting and watching a movie in my laptop, noise has gone.
Found a link in YuoTube on how to open VGN CS...

Hi, I too have he same problem. I bought the Sony Vaio VGN-CS190 on Jan 2009 in USA and got the annoying fan noise by Aug'09. As I am living in India, I did not get the warranty. I serviced in Sony service center by paying INR 5000. They have replace the fan system. I am getting the same problem now after six months. I am not ready to pay another 5000 INR. I am planning to open the laptop myself and see wats wrong....

Clean the fan from any dust "use Air Duster Cans", this is one problem that is easy to fix. Another if it continues, then lub it up. But 9 times out of 10 your labtop fan kicks on to cool the system down so it doesn't short out. You can goto Wal-Mart or Best Buy and get a Cooling Fan plate for your labtop and just set under the labtop to cool it. They range to about 30 to 40 bucks, but it's worth it.
