First thing to check: could it be aspect ratio - source material is old standard 4x3 format, TV is widescreen 16x9, so it only fills center? If so, the images will look properly proportioned - circles round (not ellipses), people neither unduly fat nor skinny. Second: if the shapes are wrong, it could be settings on source device (check DVD menu, cable/satellite set-up) and/or TV (choices like letterbox, pan and scan, stretch to fill screen, etc.) Third: if CRT TV, could be defect in horizontal sweep circuitry, requiring repair shop; decide whether the cost is worth it, vs new TV.

Every day during prime-time on ABC there are spanish subtitles that alternate between the bottom and top of the screen and get in the way of the show. I have U-verse and a Sony LCD flatscreen and can't disable them and they are really becoming a nuisance.
