Question about Computers & Internet
This answer is probably too late for you but may help others. Just to the left of the right hinge of the laptop is a small plastic lug which presses on a switch when the laptop is closed. That switch switches off the back light of the screen. Dirt can accumulate in the switch so it is permanently stuck in the off position. Clean it out carefully with a toothpick, small brush and finally vacuum it. Once clear of debris, squirt a bit of contact cleaner in (NOT WD40). You can also check to see if the LCD part of the screen is 'dead' by shining a bright torch at it once boot up has completed. You should be able to make out the normal 'enter password / logon' screen (front / side lit instead of backlit). If nothing can be seen the LCD is dead, so we're into new screen territory.
