Re: when the cover is lowered for an extended period, and...

When you close the lid it will hibernate, pressing any key does not work, you normally have to press the power button and it will power back up and show the screen and the running programmes, i think you are getting confused with sleep mode where the pc can wake opn keyboard.

How to Extend Windows 7's expiry date to 120 days.

‘Rearm’ trick on Windows 7 is done using the similar commands and steps withWindows Vista. Follow these steps to reset and extend activation grace period from 30 days to 120 days in Windows 7:
Install Windows 7 without any product activation key.
After installation is completed, use the Windows 7 for 30 days and wait for the remaining days left to activate Windows counting down to 0, or almost zero.
When the activation grace period (or evaluation trial period) is almost expired or ended, log on to Windows 7 desktop, and open a Command Prompt window (i.e. type Cmd in Start Search and hit Enter).
Type any of the following commands into the command prompt, and then hit Enter:
sysprep /generalize
slmgr.vbs –rearm
rundll32 slc.dll,SLReArmWindows
slmgr /rearm
Reboot Windows 7 to enjoy another 30 days of free usage without worrying about activation nor even need to crack Windows 7.
When the activation grace period countdown timer almost running down to 0 again, repeat the ‘rearm’ trick to enjoy another 30 days of Windows 7 for free. User can run the rearm command for maximum of 3 times.

The quickest way to change the display output settings is to use the
display hot key (Fn + F5):
1 Press Fn and F5 simultaneously.

friend If you don't mind I have a solution for your problem, as you are aware of the laptop model you have, It is better to check the warranty card for warranty period. next thing is just check for customer care contact number for the said model or any extended warranty period, extended services, replacements etc., The only suggestion I have for you is as it is a laptop, don't play with it by taking it to any person who is not a certified technician to get it done. better thing I want to suggest you for good to know information is recently I came across a website where I have seen useful information about customer care services, customer care contact numbers of various computers and other accessories also. Please don't think else if it hurts you. But the truth is it is always better to contact company reputed, operated services or showrooms to get clear of any issues.

Do I risk damaging my Acer Aspire 5742 by connecting it to my HDTV and watching for an extended period of time, i.e. 5 hours?

No you shouldn't be. If you're really worried about it though you could always get yourself a laptop cooler.

Display will not power on

Make sure you have not accidentally set it to external display this is usually FN + F5 or FN + F6.

If you still have no display try connecting it to an external display and again using the external display keys to tey and obtain a picture.

If you can obtain a picture on an external display then there is a good chance that either your inverter or lamp has failed. (unless its been dropped then who knows ?)

It is always sensible to replace both these even if only one of them has failed.
This type of repair is not too expensive and in some cases you could do it yourself if you are comfortable digging around inside the laptop.

Video/screen issue

SAVE your important stuff NOW and,
FORMATT this Machine,

I see many issues but to format and reinstall a new fresh install will quickly tell you if the issue was the graphic drivers or the machine settings because of defaults conflicting with other softwares,
or anything else,
The formatt will take minutes and the OS reinstall could be about 30 minutes depending on the OS version,

Is it doing your head in yet ???

But wait theres more,

Don't wait till its important and its vital that it works right now,
And Because it lets you down,etc......

Back up your stuff """"""AND """""" FORMAT

When it fails then formatt it,
Its already useless when you can't use the functions it was designed for but much more fun if you can recycle the info and reuse the space again and again.

Sounds like a VIRUSS ???Format will eliminate this possiblity.

Ok I have covered a couple of issues,
yes there are more,
so a very quick fix is GOOD.

Phew,I got a headacxhe just thinking about it,lol

Good luck , hope this helps, Please rate me,Thanks
