Question about Dyson DC07 Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

1 Answer

Loss of suction on carpets

My Dyson is the best vacuum ever - however it doesn't have nearly the proper suction when I use it on carpets, as it did when I first bought it. The beater bar turns, I have checked all areas for clogs, etc, I cannot seem to tell what the problem is. There is excellent suction from the wand. Can anyone give me some advice on what else to check for? Thanks alot!

Re: Loss of suction on carpets

Wow...this is one of the only "bad suction" examples I have seen. I do know that after I clean my DC07, I have to make sure that the adapter pieces are seated properly, otherwise there's an air gap.

Have you tried connecting the hose instead of the main part? Is suction still bad? If so...then it's the motor. If not, then go back to check the adapter pieces or see where there's a blockage...look harder.

Call Dyson...their support is terrific!

I have a Dyson DC44 Animal that I cannot get to work properly. It seems to have lost its suction after the first use, which wasn't that impressive. I have two cats, and when I run the vacuum over my carpet...

Hi Lauren, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC44 has twice the suction of other cordless vacuums, and we certainly wouldn't expect concerns about performance. Boost mode provides 8 minutes of highest suction power for really stubborn dirt or clinging pet hair, but for day to day vacuuming normal mode should be sufficient.

From your description it sounds like your machine may have a blockage in the floor tool, wand or bin inlet. Without suction to carry debris through the machine and into the clear bin, hair may be more likely to wrap around the brush bar. We're happy to help you check for this, and to remove any obstructions.

You may also want to wash the filter if this hasn't been done recently. We recommend doing this at least once a month, using cold water without detergent:

When you have your DC44 fully-charged and near to hand, please give our experts a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU). We look forward to providing further assistance.

My Dyson DC17 gets carpet fibers stuck between the brush bar belt and where the belt attaches to the machine (not the brush bar end of the belt) Then it shreds the carpet fiber and I have to tear it apart...

Hi there,

If you're concerned that the amount of fibre your carpet is shedding seems to be excessive, I'd recommend consulting your carpet manufacturer to determine if this is normal, as the shedding period will vary according to carpet type and usage. They may also be able to offer advice on the best way to vacuum it, as they sometimes suggest vacuuming certain carpet types using suction only.

Kind regards,

Very hard to push. It started gradually but now its nearly impossible to vacuum the carpet. Is this an easy fix?

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. If the cleaner seems more difficult than usual to push, it's a good idea to check the soleplate for damage, and to remove any threads, hair and other obstructions from the brushbar. The easiest way to do this is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:

You may also want to contact your carpet manufacturer to check it's suitable for cleaning with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a revolving brushbar. Manufacturers sometimes recommend cleaning certain types of carpeting using suction only.

If you have any further questions or concerns, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you, and recommend the best course of action. You can call us free on 1866MYDYSON - or if you email your details to, someone will be in contact as soon as possible.

I have a dyson 07. Vacuum works fine, great suction using the hose. How do I switch to using the carpet vacuum. (I lost my instruction book) Thanks

If this unit has a suction hose built in to the handle, the carpet vacuum should start working after you return the handle hose to the proper position.

Loss of suction on hand tools (DC07)

It sounds like there's probably a clog in the hose. Drop a small coin or marble down the hose and see if it falls through. There's going to be a loss of suction in the power nozzle too, just not as noticeable when vacuuming carpet.
There could also be a clog behind the filter where the hose plugs into tank, or a dirty filter.

Hi loss of suction on Dyson DC07 and I have changed the belt on the brushbar and cleaned all filters/removeable parts but still suction not very good, any other suggestions?

Check for a clog where the power nozzle connects to the hose. Clogs or leaks in the hose will both cause loss of suction/air flow. Another possibility is broken or worn out fan blades.

Dyson power head stops when on carpets, cleaned brush out, still happens.

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

As the Turbine head is air driven, you may need to wash the filter and check the rest of the machine for a blockage as a loss of suction will also reduce the performance of the Turbine head.
