Your laptop has a SATA hard drive and windows XP doesn't recognize those drives cause the operating system came out before those drive were made.

Follow these steps I found thru google to get windows xp sp3 to recognize your drive:

You'll have to use a program to do this but people explain how to do it on that page plus the program is free.

I have a dell inspirion laptop which originally came with vista that i bought used, prior to my purchase someone installed umbuntu, doesnt work want windows back

F8 brings up Windows Recovery Options, if Windows is gone, so are those options. When they installed Ubuntu they also most likely deleted the recovery partitions, so there's no longer anything to restore. If you can get your hands on an appropriate Vista install disc you can do a clean install using the key attached to your laptop (if it's still present/readable). I'd check with local computer repair shops and see if one of them has a disc they can copy for you.

I'm installing ubuntu linux 8.04 on my acer laptop - partition question

Yes you can resize your drive later, before installing ubuntu on the same drive with another operateing system you need to defrag the existing drive, and then resize the partition and then install the ubuntu.

Windows 8.1 x64 dvd won't boot on UEFI pre-installed Ubuntu laptop

not sure on this one Ubuntu likes to be installed last after windows is set up. I would think that you would have to blow away the ubuntu partitions by resizing the partitions to one partion. But you would want to be extremely careful not to touch the hidden recovery partition. You could use a program called gparted to see what the partions are and resize the partion. Extreme caution is needed as if you get it wrong you will not be able to undo it. The problem you are experiencing is because the boot loader is ubuntu grub. You will need another computer to download a gparted iso file and then use infrarecorder to make a boot cd. it can be found at see

If Unbuntu reformatted the drive the recovery partition may no longer exist. You may have to rebuild from orginal media.

My Lenovo lap 892229U 3000 c200 crashed and I do not have the installation cd. I loaded on the XP operating system but I am have problems loading on the drivers like the sound, wireless etc.

you probably have a secure partition. it will contain your recovery disks if you have not changed your partitions or changed disks. you may either have to create the disks from this partition or run a recovery program from this partition (drive)(folder).

Where can i download free recovery cd for windows xp

You can't download operating system CD's, but depending on your manufacturer of your system, you may be able to request a one-time free set of installation CD's if the machine originally came with them and not with the software installed on a partition. If you canm start your machine and it has your software instalation on a partition, you can make your own restoration CD's, but you didn't provide any info on your PC so I don't know how anyone can provide an accurate answer for you.

Ubuntu installation

Relax Sairam -- you don't have know all these answers.

First step, download Ubuntu and burn to a CD .

Second adjust your bios if necessary to change the boot preferences on your machine, so that it will try your CD/DVD device first before trying to boot from a hard disk.

Third, let the Ubuntu Live CD execute and bring up a desktop. On the desktop, there should be an icon to actually install Ubuntu. It will guide your through all the decisions that you need to make.

You may find it advantageous to have a "dual boot" configuration on your machine... i.e., having the choice of running some windows operating system, or ubuntu.

To reformat toshiba p300-1cn without recovery discs??

If you do not have a recovery partition, you will need to have some sort of bootable disc with an operating system on it. The reasoning behind this is that your computer cannot format a hard-drive it is currently running off of unless the hard-drive is partitioned and your OS is running on a partition that is not being formatted. I would recommend either getting windows recovery disks, or a copy of Ubuntu or such free Linux distributions for this action. After your Laptop is formatted it will have no Operating system and will not work until one is installed on it.
