Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

2 Answers

My computer sees the drive when I plug it in, but it does not assign a drive letter to it or let me open it. In device manager, the computer sees it and says it is working properly.

Thanks Guys. In disc management it shows as unallocated, but I've been using this for about a year, it's a Maxtor Personal Storage 3200. I cannot assign a drive letter to it, and haven't tried formatting yet. I'm currently using a file recovery program and copying all my files to another drive before trying the format solution. This is a 200gb drive and must have a small program on it as the disc manager only sees 189gb.

Sounds like it isn't formatted. Right-Click My computer, go to Manage, then select Disk Management. Here you can assign a drive letter and format partitions. I would reccomend to chose NTFS as the file system type when formatting.

Hello,

By any chance, do you already have a drive present using Drive Letter "F"? Oddly enough, alot of external drives stop looking for drive letters after F and so they will not get a drive letter. As stated above, Right-Click My computer, go to Manage, then select Disk Management. right click on the external drive there and change the drive letter to an unused letter (such as M). The drive should now show in your list of available drives in My Computer.

Hope this helps!

FYI - a 200gb hard drive is not truly 200gb. If you read the packaging, all hard drive manufacturers go with the rule of 1,000,000,000 bytes = 1 gigabyte, when in actuality, 1 gigabyte is 1,024,000,000 bytes, thus the size discrepency.

I hate that...makes you feel like you got ripped off :-)

I plug in my WD external hard drive, i hear the chime saying the computer knows i plugged something in, but i see no icon to click on to open it. HELP! i have soooooo much information on this thing!

- try plug in a normal usb port (usb2)

- try open up the device manager, look for your WD and delete it.
then unplug and plug back.

try goto control panels->administrative tools->computer management->disk management
and see if your wd appears there. if yes, try change the drive letter assignment.

Nalon:
Assuming that you're using Windows:
Assign a drive letter for the External drive.

  • Right Click on My Computer
  • Scroll to Manage
  • Select Disk Management
  • Locate the External drive in the lower bottom Right corner, Right Click, Select Assign Drive Letter. Ok/Close

Open up My Computer, and you should see your External drive with your new drive letter assigned to it.

Hello

Can you feel the drive spinning at the power up?
If the computer makes a sound, without notifying you that the device is not recognized, here is something you can try.

Go to:
Start
Control Panel
Administrative tools
Computer Management
Storage
Disc Management

Now you should see your drive in the schematic below, right click on it and choose to assign new drive letter and paths. If there is no drive letter assigned to the drive, assign on, otherwise just choose the option to change the drive letter.

Hope this can help you.

Kind regards
Andrea

Western Digital External HDD not appearing in My Computer

It could be that the OS is not assigning a drive letter to your removable drive. To do this, go to disk management and assign one.

Assuming OS is Win 2000/XP/Vista

Right-click My Computer then Manage
Click on Disk Management
Right-click the removable drive and click on Change Drive Letter
Assign a drive letter and click OK
Your drive should now show up on My Computer

Hope this helps.

The Computer Management window will open.
Click on Disk Management and you should see the rive listed in the right-hand pane, without a drive letter assigned.
Right click on this drive and assign it a letter, like Q.

Cant put songs onto my daughters bratz mp3 player

Hi,
When plugging a USB removable device/storage, you should see an icon named "Safely Remove Hardware" in the system tray (right side of the task bar, near the clock). Left click on it, and you should see a list of removable hardware.
If you can not see the device there, then there is problems with your MP3 player, perhaps the battery is too weak; if this is the case, just leave it a few minutes until the device charged and initializes and recognized by the computer.
If you can see the device, but no drive letter assigned to it, then there is problem assigning drive letter to it.
You can re-arrange the drive letter assignment by entering Computer Management console: right-click on My Computer, then click on Manage.
Choose Disk Management, and assign a drive letter to your device.
