Question about SMC TigerSwitch 6508TT

1 Answer

Adding a PC to the network

I have a SMC TigerSwitch 6508TT. There is one pc connected to it, one network printer, the DSL modem and a DI-524 wireless router. I'm trying to add another pc but when I plug in the ethernet cable, the port does become active. It continues to blink available. What else do I need to do to have the 6508T recognize the new pc?

Make sure your network card on the computer is enabled and properly installed. Also try replacing the cable with one that is known to be good. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I want to disable wirless broadcasting in D-Link DI-524 how i can do it ?

I don't think you can disable the wireless but you can prevent people accessing your wireless network.
To secure your wireless network from unauthorized access, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

Alternately you can connect your computer to your DSL or cable modem without using the D-Link.

I have hooked my di 524 from my DSL cable modem then hooked the two in line to my computer when I hooked up to the computer I have no connectivity why?

OK, if I understand:
telephone----DSL Modem--di 524--computer.
That is what you are supposed to do.
Has any configuration of these devices ever had any connectivity?
1. Is the DSL modem in "Bridge Mode"? That is the first thing I'd check.
2. Are you using the right wires and ports? There may be a DCE-DTE problem. Be sure you have used the wire that came with the DSL modem to hook it to the internet port on the DI-524.
3. What is the state of all the various lights? Do they show that you have valid connections?
4. Most of these devices can be configured with a browser. When you browse them, what do you see?
5. What is windows telling you?

Ethernet connection of DI-524 does not work

You have to make the Ip changes on the laptop not on the modem.
You said you have internet acces on one computer. Then use that computer to find out the exact IP address used by the modem.
On the laptop use the exact same numbers, (IP, Sub mask, Gateway, Primary DNS)
and chek if it works.
If you want to have both computers on the Internet, simply change the last number on the IP address ONLY.

DI 524 Connection Problem

Try the DSL modem directly connected to the PC.No D-Link Router (powered off and disconnected). Verify that the PC couldsurf/browse/connect to the Internet. Go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, right click Local Area Connection, Properties, scroll down to/highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Properties button. Get the IP Add, Subnet Mask,Default Gateway and DNS assigned to the PC (write this down. This will be your WAN/Internet IP settings). Then Disable DHCP of your modem if it has one. OK, close, save or whatever is applicable.

Disconnect the DSL modem from the PC. Connect D-Link Router to PC (wired/LAN) without the modem connected to the router. Go again to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, right click Local AreaConnection, Properties, scroll down to/highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP), Properties button. Tick "Use the following IP address". Enter this IP Add, Subnet Mask,Default Gateway and the DNS from what you have written down earlier). This willbe your LAN IP settings. OK, close, save or whatever is applicable.

Open a browser and log into the D-Link router (, using "admin" as a username and no password). Do not run Wireless Network Setup Wizard. In WAN/Internet/Modem setting of router enable/check Static IP Add.Use the IP numbers previously assigned to PC that you have writtendown as the router's WAN/Internet/Modem IP settings. OK, close, save or whatever is applicable. Rebootrouter. Connect DSL modem to router.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Can get to the page but can not connect to the internet, i keep getting either low conectivity. or cabel in plugged. i have the di-524 ops is xp

Sounds like your DSL/Cable modem is not talking properly to your new wireless router. Depending on your modem, my first guess and thing to check is that your DSL/Cable modem is in bridge mode to connect to your new wireless router.

Router cannot get IP with cisco 675 modem

The issue may be due to the existence of two (2) DHCP servers; 1 in the Cisco 675 and the 2nd in the DLink DI-524. You need to disable the Cisco's DHCP server function and assign static IP add & config to the DLink WAN config. This way it will only be the DLink handing out IP adds to the network.

The workaround. Install your original configuration/setting without the DLink DI-524 - PC direct to the Cisco 675 (I am assuming through Ethernet ports). Verify that indeed you are connected to the Internet and can surf the net, check e-mails, etc. Check your Networking Connection Status. Log down your PC's IP Add, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS. For purposes of discussion, let's call this "N1".

After your Internet connection has been verified with your PC directly connected to the Cisco, remove the direct connection and connect the DLink DI-524 in between the Cisco router and your PC.

Log in to the DLink and modify WAN parameters using the "N1" configurations/settings.

It might be of help to disable any security (WEP WPA, MAC etc) at least while configuring.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Connect to wireless D-Link and Westell6100

I am assuming that you have a functional LAN cable connecting the Westell and the DI 524, right? If you are unsure, replace it with a cable you know is good.

If the 524 is turned on downstream of the Westell modem, it should find what it wants. You may try rebooting the Westell and seeing if the 524 finds it, and you maybe should reboot the 524.

Sometimes, when the world gets jiggered up I have to work pretty hard to get my DI-524 resync'd to my DSL modem.
