My 2006 Cobalt has a loud grinding sound coming from the drivers side front tire the noise only happens as I push the gas pedal, soon as I let off the noise has stopped. Thought at first to be the cv joint but dont they generally show wear to the rubber boot when they go bad. from reading it sounds like maybe a bushing. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Your wheel bearings need replaced,just replaced both front ones on my car,Then you will need to have your tires balanced,rotated and front end aligned.Mine was coming from my front driver side,it was loud,replaced,then the passenger side was making a noise,but not as loud,now it is like new.

It's the car pulling to that side? Sticking brake pad possible. When did you have brakes done last off at all? Front brakes go out twice as fast as rear brakes. If you can Charlie jack up that side put car in park, set emergency brake and chock rear tires. Pull off that tire and see if rotor is grooved or scored badly. It may have been sticking and wore down faster. Also check CV BOOT. If torn u joints get dirty and will grind. Hope this was some help.

This sounds like a CV joint is bad. It is binding up and locking and then slips when you move.

We can rule out the tire and rim since it blanced with no issues and I'm assuming no wobble was found during the balancing procedure. Rotors were turned, so we can factor this out also. The only component that can not be ruled out is the bearing, it seems fine, but we need to know that it is fine. Has the vehicle been jacked up and supported, placed in gear to see if the noise happens when the wheels are not touching the ground?

I suspect the noise you are describing is a bad wheel bearing.
It consists of a hub assembly that is relatively easy to replace. It takes about an hour or less to do with proper tools in a good repair shop.
I would also suggest you get a quality hub as the cheap ones do not last long.
If it as loud as you describe I strongly suggest you get it repaired as soon as possible.

CV joints gone. Replace asap.

Have a mechanic check lower control arm bushing at the rear of the control arm.It is a horizontal bushing retained by a vertical bolt clamping it to frame.The tire will move more forward and back more than it should during braking. canuck mechanic.
