Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance. Also, please be so kind to let me know if you found this helpful.

Regards
Andrea

The camera locks up

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.
  1. There are six screws holding the metal frame of the camera body together, two on each side, and two on the bottom. Remove all screws, pop the strap-hook plate (sorry, probably not the most technical term there), then gently lift the front plate off by pulling up from the bottom, and remove the back plate in the same fashion. These should come off relatively easily. This is what the camera should look like as you remove the plates:

  2. Now, looking from the top of the camera, you should see a small motor on the left side, as shown below (its beneath the cable with a 22 written on it):

    http://willwm.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/img-5346.jpg
  3. Take your screwdriver (or another small instrument) and gently try to rotate the plastic piece attached to the motor on the left side, as shown below:
    http://willwm.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/img-5359.jpg
  4. At this point, try placing the battery back in the camera (if you have removed it), turn the camera to one of the capture modes, and press the power button. If all went well, your lens should now be able to extend and retract properly.

Camera won't function - "E18" (Canon PowerShot S230)

Try lightly tapping lens on a hard surface. This sometimes reseats the lens. If this does not work take to bits and reassemble.

I have a Canon PowerShot A40 and when I turn it on in the picture taking mode, it flashes E18 and turns off. I can view previous pictures. The lens doesn't open up either. Help!

E18 is a lens error message - Dirt may be in the lens mechanism. Canon can service it, although the camera is no longer in production.

Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital... E18 Problem

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

Cannon A70 lens stuck in middle causing it to keep powering off

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty they're worth a try:

Camera will not operate

Use the audio-visual cable that came with your camera and connect your camera to your TV.  Now turn-on your camera and switch to "view mode", e.g., to see a already taken picture on your LCD.  You will not see anything on your LCD but may see an image on your TV, even if the image is "F18".

I used the above trick to clear an F18 error on an A75.  Right now I am trying to get the camera to focus properly, but somehow the above cleared the F18 error.

If the above does not work, try connecting your camera to your computer's USB port using the other cable that came with the camera.  Your camera will want to be on, and in the "view mode".  I have read that this trick can reset an F18 error.

Good luck.  At least it costs zero to try these two tips.

Tab on the camera. E18 is a stuck lens. This is common on this camera. I'm not saying this will fix it, but don't break it.
