If there is an error code with an E followed by a number or "88" displays/flashes it would be an internal issue in the base unit. Uniden does offer a limited 1 year warranty (Covers Manufacture Defects ONLY, if caused by a power surge or power outage or any other type of damage that is not a Manufacture Defect this is not covered under warranty) off the proof of purchase. The proof of purchase is required for warranty service.
I spoke to the manufacturer this morning because I was having the same issue ... I was told that the flashing 88 means that the base unit is has gone kaput and is no longer working. period.
customer service said that this can happen due to electrical issues and the company will send me a new base unit and handset to replace the one that no longer works.
I just got off of the phone with Uniden for the same issue with my D1680-4. The alternating "8" - "88" code is an indication that the base is dead. They will be sending me a new base (and 2 handsets). During the call I learned that if you do not have a receipt, Uniden warrants their phones for up to 15 months. The advertised 12 months, plus 3 months for the product to get from manufacturing, through distribution channel and finally sale to the consumer.

Base unit display flashing "8" and "88" repeatedly and then after several minuteseventually displays "E4" steadily. none of the keypad inputs register - unit is basically non funtioning with the exception of the display. no dial tone on base unit or on any of the handhelds. Manuall trouble shooting guide has no suggestions for this conditions nor does it contain any error code definitions. Have unplugger and replugged unit power source (to see if it would possibly reset) with same results. Would appreciate any assistance or suggestions you could offer. Thank you.
