My philips webcam (i have no clue what kind it is, but i bought it a few years ago) was working brilliantly until one day i go on msn to talk to friends i havent seen for a while, and it blurrs. i have NO...

1) Dirty lens
2) Some webcams have a focus ring around the lens that can be rotated to optimise clarity - others rely on the software to achieve the best focal length
Open MSN
Click 'Open Menu'
From 'Tools; navigate to, and click, 'Audio and Video setup'
Click 'Next'
This takes you to the video setup
Set your webcam as default
Your webcam should be broadcasting
Use 'Webcam Settings' link to fine tune the picture.
Some webcams rely on a USB 2 (high speed or enhanced connection) On my laptop I have a mixture of 1.1 and 2.0 USB ports
If I use a USB 1.1 port the webcam quality is poor

3) Test your USB connection
1) Connect webcam and run MSN
2) Navigate to Device Manager
(XP) Right Click on "My Computer" and select "Properties".
In the "System Properties" window, click the "Hardware" tab.
Under the "Hardware" tab, click the "Device Manager" button.
(Vista) Right Click on "Computer" and select "Properties".
Select "Device Manager"

3) Confirm that your device is listed under the USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller
In "Device Manager" go to "View" and select "Devices by connection".
Expand "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)".
Expand "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System".
Expand "PCI bus".
Locate and expand the "USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller" entry (see note).*
Expand "USB Root Hub" and verify that your camera is listed.

Note* Confirming your device is listed under the USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller' may produce a manufacturer listing that differes from the following example depending on the USB chipset that is included on your motherboard. The example shows "Intel" as the chipset manufacturer. When performing this step, please notice the keywords "USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller"

Try to run Cyberlink Cam Pro or any messaging applications like Yahoo and MSN Messenger or Skype and activate webcam under preferences or start a video chat/call to access your webcam.

My webcam is blurry on MSN Live

Most of the blurriness of webcameras is due to poor lighting - try to increase the light next to where you are sitting. Also check for a rotatable ring around the lens - that's the focus ring, but not all cameras have that, some are fixed-focus.

My MSN freezes eveytime i go on webcam to somebody.

Sounds like a conflict or resource problem

1) Try downloading a new browser and run it without add-ons or plug-ins
set it to default and then try msn
2) I am more Yahoo than msn and one way to prevent this in Yahoo is to put the webcam under VFW control
try visiting this page - must be with IE !!
This action makes a registry change - It increased the frames/ per/ second by 100% for me
3) Increase your virtual memory
4) You do not say if you are on dial-up, if you are I strongly recommend upgrading to broadband. Internet connection via mobile phone can be pretty fragile as well.

I cannot open my built in crystal cam even though the properties state that is working and i have disable and enabled it aswell

if you're using it in webchat and other programs, they'll be able to detect it themselves. I have a built in webcam on my laptop too and I can't seem to access it unless I go through Photoshop or MSN messenger.

Hope this helps

Does it display as a black image, a white image or static? You most likely have 1 of 2 problems. Either your camera (the actual lens if you want to be technical) may have been damaged or you are having an issue with drivers. Go Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Device Manager. Under Imaging devices your web cam should be listed. Double click the description and post back with what the information from that window.

Error code 80048820

MSN Message error 80048820, unable to signin

- While you try to Sign in MSN Messenger you getting an error message with the no. 80048820
- Unable to Sing in

Probably reasons-
- Your system time/date incorrect
- Internet Proxy setting incorrect
- softpub.dll disable/missing
- Firewall does not allow to access, etc.

- Remove Internet Explorer proxy server settings and check the 'Automatically detect settings'.
- Launch Internet Explorer, click "Tools" and then click Internet Options. From the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab. Click LAN Setting. Uncheck the Use a proxy server for your LAN checkbox. Finally tick/check: 'Automatically detect settings'.

- Correct the computer system's Time/Day as current (if required).

- Click Start (Button), and then click Run, type regsvr32 softpub.dll click ok.

- Turn off the firewall. Check firewall settings such as Norton: "Block access to secure sites". If this cures the problem, make sure that Microsoft's MSN Messenger is allowed full access through your firewall.
