Thanks for the reply. I do believe the solder is loose. Where can I find instructions online to take apart the T42? I have searched everywhere and the vid I saw on youtube shows the guy just pulling it apart, but now how he did it.

I want to do this myself. They want $140 to do it in an IBM service center.

Is your power cord loose. if it is not loose then there is some dry solder in the laptop power supply.Check it out.

My 1 year old computer has a black screen but u can hear the computer running help....

Are you getting any beeps while your computer starts up or when it has already started? If yes, then refer to the following HP Support page to get details about different types of beeps and the respective issue they indicate:
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c02222922#N315
If you are not getting any beeps, you can start troubleshooting the issue by first checking the connectivity and performance of your monitor. To do this, refer to the steps below:
1)Make sure that your monitor has power and the power light on it turns On when power is supplied to the monitor. If the light stays Off, turn Off the power supply- unplug and plug the power cord- reseat the power adaptor connection on your monitor's end- turn On the power supply. If the monitor's light glows, see if the computer still shows the blank screen. If yes, follow the steps ahead.
2)If your monitor is of flat panel LCD type, unplug its power cord and wait for around 30 seconds so that the electronics in your monitor are reset. Now reconnect the cord and turn On the monitor.
3)If you are still facing the blank screen issue, disconnect all the connected devices to your computer except mouse, keyboard, and monitor. Also remove memory cards from card reader slots (if any) and thumb drives connected to your computer (if any).
4)If the above steps do not resolve your issue, you can try (if possible) to connect your monitor to another video cable (if it is detachable) for testing purpose.
If the issue still persists, you can refer to the HP Support links below to troubleshoot your issue:

Loose AC Power connector on T42, have to jiggle the power cord to get it to connect and power the T42.

This problem is not a "end-user" type of repair.

Take your computer to a qualified technician, for proper repair.

My ps3 has stopped connecting to the internet, checked internet and it is working, how do I sort it?

I had the same problem. What you can try is go to the recovery menu. Turn the PS3 onto standy (red light on). Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you hold it, keep pressing it until it beeps again and then once more 5 seconds later. The system will switch off. Press and hold the power button again, 1 beep straight away, then another 5 seconds later then 2 quick beeps, let go of the power button. It will now boot into the recovery menu. Select restore file system. It will restore and then reset. Hopefully this will solve it for you.

IBM Thinkpad T42. About 1hr ago went black-dead. When the power supply is plugged in there is no icon illuminated. No power reaching anything. Recently have had some fan-error warnings and have been...

Check power adapter’s DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

did you try replacing the power cord? This may help. I would try also to connect the laptop to different sources of power, load the battery through different sockets.

also, check your power saving settings, this may be affective. there are a few programs which can help you save power smartly.

IBM t42 comes on, beeps twice and goes off, connected and battery

Yes it is the fan, get a can of compressed air and clean the air vents and the CPU fan with that, also i would check into the CMOS battery as it could be dead and needs replacing.
As the laptop starts up hit F1 when you see the IBM logo and check the date and time, that will be a clear indicator IF the CMOS battery is dead because it will not be the right date and time, it should however let you into windows if you put the date and time right (it may take a couple of attempts)

Good luck

Laptop will not come on . it started all of a sudden.

when you connect to the raw power, do you hear any beeps ? Is there a sequence ? Long beeps / short beeps ? Anything of this sort could mean a issue wiht the internal hardware.

If there are no beeps, then I think its with the power itself. Could be the power cord .

Hope this helps
