Chainsaw oiler issue

I have a Poulan 14 inch chainsaw, relatively new... only been through one chain, and sharpened a few times. It has always oiled the chain thoroughly -- almost too much. However, after the last use, I removed the bar and thoroughly cleaned the saw, and reassembled. No use for a few months, but when I did use it the next time, the chain was getting almost no oil. [I had just topped off the oil resevoir.] There was some oil getting out, but very little. Any ideas why? [I checked the line coming out from the oil supply, and it appears fine, as do the two oil holes in the bar.]

THE FIRST THING I WOULD CHECK IS THE BREATHER IT HAS TO LET AIR IN SOMEWHERE AS THE OIL FLOWS OUT IT MAY BE CLOGGED TRY RUNNING THE SAW WITH THE OIL CAP OF DONT DO ANY CUTTING JUST RUNSEE IF IT OILS THEN IF NOT MOST SAWS HAVE A OIL FLOW ADJUSTMENT SCREW TAKE THE BAR OFF AND LOOK AROUND WERE THE OIL COMES OUT THE ONLY OTHER THING IT MAY BE IS A CLOG IN THE LINE

You can find many useful videos on youtube that will help you with the sharpening of your chainsaw.

I have, however, found it much better to take my chains to my local shop and have them do it for me, especially if you have never done it before.
The key to a good cutting chainsaw, is a nice sharp chain.
It doesnt cost all that much to have them sharpened. I paid 8 dollars to have 2, 18 inch chains sharpened. I live in Pennsylvania, land of the tax, so I wouldn't think it would cost you too much.
I always have 4 chains on hand. When 2 need sharpened, I take them in and still have 2 more, and I know they are guaranteed, sharp.

Poulan pro troubleshooting

CHAIN STRETCHS AS IT HEATS - KEEP CHAIN TIGHTENED CORRECTLY AND ALWAYS KEEP OIL IN OILER AND MAKE SURE IT OILS THE CHAIN. IF THIS DOESN'T FIX - REPLACE THE CHAIN. IF IT STILL HAPPENS THEN REPLACE BAR. WILL FAIL AGAIN WITHOUT OIL. POULAN WILL NOT HOLD UP WITHOUT CHAIN LUBRICATION. WORSE THAN OTHERS. IF CHAIN OR BAR OVERHEATED YOU'LL WORK ON IT MORE THAN YOU CUT. OIL IS THE KEY TO CUT WITH A POULAN!

How to sharpen chain on poulan pro 20 inch chainsaw

It can be done with a file of the right size for the chain. I take my chain off the saw and to a chain saw shop for a professional job.

Oiler not working gave it a good cleaning inside & out still no oil

The oil pump is run by a worm gear that is easily stripped. It sounds like this is your problem. You'll have to take the bar and chain off and get into the saw to replace it. Parts are available through poulan if you call the number on the product.

Use regular bar/chain oil available from home centers, hardware stores, and saw shops. Always keep the chain properly sharpened and tensioned so that you don't have to force the chain into the cut which causes motor overheating. If you need to make an 'under' cut, do so with the top of the bar--don't run the saw upside down. Good luck!

Cuts at an angle

It cuts at an angle because the chain needs sharpening. If you want to do it yourself, you will need a 5/32 inch chainsaw file and here is a website that shows how to sharpen it...

That is excessive, make them repair it. Your saw is warranted for 1 year.
The IPL lists no oiler adjustment and the Operator's Manual doesn't mention any oiler adjustment.

If you using any Bar Oil (30 weight with stuff added to make adhere to your bar and chain) and not a light weight motor oil I recommend you contact Poulan and make them repair it. Anything you attempt may void your warranty, do nothing without an official OkeyDokey. Get names, dates, and times in an e-mail for any official OkeyDokeys and save a copy them somewhere a computer crash won't wipe them out.

Poulan oiler don't work

Common problem with Poulan and Craftsman gas saws. Take off the chain and chain guide and clean out all the saw dust etc. Start saw without chain and look for port where there are signs of oil. If port is clear of sawdust, then it is likely the pump which is located behind the chain break assembly. you can get the diagram on Poulan website and the replacement pump will cost about $15 - $20 to replace yours.

Ryobi 14 inch electric chainsaw won't cut with new chain

Hi Rossmac,

Both the smoke and it's lack of cutting ability are symptoms of the same problem. The Chain is dulled. Instead of cutting, it's just rubbing on the wood and heating up. It's also not a big deal to fix..

Your options are:
  • Replace the Chain
  • Have the Chain sharpened
  • Sharpen it yourself
To sharpen it yourself, you will need a narrow round file that will fit inside the Chain teeth. Each tooth has a two cutting edges, get the file a position that matches the tooths angle of attack. Don't over do, three to five swipes of the file should do it on each surface.

You will see they alternate directions. You may find it easier to do all the teeth in one direction (skipping every other tooth) then do the other direction. Up to you.

When you are done, check the level of your chain oil. Since it did get hot, you might manually oil the chain before trying out your handi-work.

Go cut some wood.
Mike
