Hey,

I hope when you say that you wish to reset the system you mean you need to go to the factory settings. If you wish to go to the factory settings and even if you do not remember the password, there is still a way to do it. But in order to do it you need to have the OS disc from Dell. You have one, you can perform the following steps. It works for Vista:

HOW TO RESTORE DELL LAPTOP TO FACTORY SETTINGS USING DELL OPERATING SYSTEM WINDOWS VISTA DVD
1. Insert the Dell Windows Vista DVD into the DVD drive, and then restart the computer. 2. During the startup process, repeatedly press <F12>. 3. In the Boot Device Menu, press the <Down Arrow> to select *Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive, and then press <Enter>. If the Boot Device Menu does not appear, restart the computer. (You might not get Onboard or USB CD-rom Drive in that case if you get any option that says anything about CD or DVD, select that option) 4. When the Press any key to boot from CD or DVD screen appears, immediately press any key to start the computer from the Windows Vista DVD. For example, immediately press the <Spacebar> when the Press any key to boot from CD or DVD screen appears. If you do not press a key immediately, the computer may not start from the Windows Vista DVD to do image restore. Instead, the computer may try to start the currently-installed copy of Windows Vista operating system. If this situation occurs, restart the computer, and then repeat steps 2 and 3.
5. When Windows Vista starts from the Windows Vista DVD, other screens may appear during the startup process. If other screens appear, accept the default options, and then continue to the language settings screen.
6. On the language settings screen, click the appropriate language in the Language to install list, click the appropriate time and currency format in the Time and currency format list, click the appropriate keyboard layout to use in the Keyboard or input method list, and then click Next. 7. On the lower-left corner of the Install now screen, click Repair your computer.
8. If the Windows Vista Setup program detects any problems on the computer, click No when the program displays the following message:
Windows found problems with your computer's startup options.
Do you want to apply repairs and restart your computer? 9. In the System Recovery Options window, under Operating System, click Windows Vista (TM) Version, even if this entry is already selected, and then click Next to display the Choose a recovery tool window. 10. Click on Command Prompt 11. Type path d:\windows;d:\windows\system32 and press <ENTER> key 12. Type d: and press <ENTER> key 13. Type cd tools and press <ENTER> key 14. Type PCRestore and press the <ENTER> key and Dell Factory Image Restore window will appear 15. Click on Next and Confirm Data Deletion dialog will appear 16.Place a check mark beside "Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition" for the final confirmation & click on Next when ready The restoration process takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes; the format bar will run back and forth (See Image 17. Click Finish to reboot system

Is it the Windows password? For that you need to use a program called System Commander which you can find on the Ultimate Boot CD.

http://www.ubcd4win.com/

Download and burn this to a CD to boot the laptop from. The utilities on it will help you reset the password.

Best of all, it's a free program!

Good Luck!

SOURCE: dell latitude bios reset

The BIOS setup password is stored in NVRAM and can only be accessed with that password. On the bottom of the laptop there is a Service Tag number. Dell support site can use that number to generate a master password for you. http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn If you need further help please post back. If it is a BIOS password than unfortunately there is not much you can do.

BIOS information is stored on a flash memory chip built into the motherboard so there is not battery you can simply remove to reset the password.

if you are talking about the Administrator password for Windows than use these instructions:

Petter Nordahl-Hagen has written a Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista offline password editor: home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

  • This is a utility to (re)set the password of any user that has a valid (local) account on your Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista system, by modifying the encrypted password in the registry's SAM file.
  • You do not need to know the old password to set a new one.
  • It works offline, that is, you have to shutdown your computer and boot off a floppy disk or CD. The boot-disk includes stuff to access NTFS partitions and scripts to glue the whole thing together.
  • Works with syskey (no need to turn it off, but you can if you have lost the key)
  • Will detect and offer to unlock locked or disabled out user accounts!
Caution: If used on users that have EFS encrypted files, and the system is XP or later service packs on W2K, all encrypted files for that user will be UNREADABLE! and cannot be recovered unless you remember the old password again! Download link:

SOURCE: please tell me how to

OPTION 1:

If you have the basic knowledge of computer engineering, then follow the following steps

1. Remove the BATTERY before starting
2. Unscrew all the screws of the laptop (with care and concentration)
3. Look for the CMOS battery (a flat silver coloured battery),
4. Detach it from the board
5. Wait for 1 mins before attaching the CMOS battery.
6. Couple the Laptop back (with care)
7. Fix the BATTERY and power the Laptop.

Then the BIOS has been reset, you can now enter the BIOS setup without any password

OPTION 2:
Contact a prominent and expert Laptop engineer, tell him to help you to reset the CMOS by removing the CMOS Battery
