If your laptop is pretty much old, then probably there is no a restore partition in your hdd...
If you have to restore windows xp to a previous date, you have to launch the microsoft recovery console and select an old restore point. This is mostly for occasions to solve software instability or virus attacks
Try restoring it from System Restore i.e go to Start - All Program - Accessories - System Tool - System Restore. It is the only way to do it without Windows XP cd.....!!!

If your Compaq did not come with a restoration CD then you should have a separate partition on your hard drive that will allow you to restore it.
Open My Computer to find out if you have a Restore Partition on your HDD.
It will show up as 2 HDD's. One will be the C: drive and the Restore partition will be probably D, if it's there.
Another way to tell if you have a Restore partition is at the boot logo, you will see an F key to press to enter the Recovery Partition. I believe Compaq uses F11 as the Key.
Get into the Restore partition and follow the prompts to wipe and restore the PC back to the original configuration.
You will lose everything you installed, so if you have any inportant data, copy it somewhere.

When you first start the computer, go to the BIOS (usually press [Delete]) and make sure the hard drive you are installing Windows XP to is the second or third boot device. If your CD drive is IDE and your hard drive is SATA you may have a problem in the BIOS of not being able to cross from IDE to SATA.
