Question about Sony HT-CT100 Theater System

1 Answer

Sony HT-CT100 soundbar + STR-DG720 = Yes misery, no audio

Here's my setup. I purposely purchased all Sony components to make everything sync with ease (that didn't work too well).
TV: KDL-32L4 Receiver: STR-DG720 Speakers: HT-CT100 DVD: sony...no issues with this
First off, I realize now that the receiver and the soundbar are redundant. I should still be able to make this configuration work.
If I hook up DVD via HDMI to the receiver, with Optical out to the receiver and then RCA to the Soundbar, I only get the FM radio, but I cannot adjust volume nor soundfields using receiver (this is what I want)
If I hook up HDMI dvd to receiver, output HDMI from receiver to Soundbar, then soundbar HDMI back to TV, I can get DVD to play, but volume and soundfields still from soundbar and not receiver.
I have hosed around with this darn configuration for about two weeks, and I cannot get everything working. I basically want the soundbar to just act like a speaker, nothing more....any ideas?

It's not going to do whayt you want. On the premise that you can't run a dedicated receiver to a dedicated receiver. One processor is not going to override another. The soundbar is a "self contained" closed system. Much like Bose products. I understand what you are looking for, it just can't be done with this product. Options: replace the sony soundbar with a passive polk soundbar or similar and keep the AV receiver or: Return the AV receiver and use the nice, but limited sony amplified soundbar. Hope this helps

hook your dvd player up to the tv via hdmi, then take the optical audio output from you tv to the soundbar. Make sure to enable to audio output jack in the tv setup menu as some manufacturers disable this jack by default.

Sony STR 1200 audio-visual sync

Yes it can be fixed.

Enter the speaker setup menu and toggle till you get to the selection for speaker distance. Assuming that you have your speakers properly positioned for correct reproduction of 5.1 surround sound, decreasing the setting for speaker distance will help. Start with 3-4 feet closer from the current setting. This enables the on board DSP (digital signal processor) to delay in milliseconds, the sound output for closer distance settings. It can also advance in milliseconds as well for further distance settings FYI.

Macbook Pro DVI---> HDMI + Digital Optical Out = Problem w/ Sound

On the Sony The HDMI takes "priority" over all others, that's why you loose audio. If you run your DVI/HDMI to the TV and optical to the soundbar that would fix your issue. If your TV does not have Multiple HDMI inputs, you can get a DVI/Component adapter for your MBP then run it to the TV, or, If you have to have HDMI just to have HDMI, you can get a 2:1 HDMI switch and still have optical to your soundbar. Make sense? If youneed more help, just post a comment and I'll help some more.

Wiring problems

Not certain if HDMI can be used in a setup like this. I'd try it from the home theater (HT) to the TV, and other wiring for the other components.

For video:
All of these should have component connections (Y/Pr/Pb). You'll only need the video cables for each device:
  • Video out from cable, HT, and combo player.
  • Video in to TV. Your choice of inputs.
For audio:
Hopefully, the two output devices (the combo player and the cable box) have digital audio (fiber optic, or RCA coaxial). Otherwise, you'll only get stereo sound. VHS is stereo only anyway.
  • Audio out from cable box and combo player.
  • Audio in to HT.
The TV won't have anything to do with audio in this setup. Alternatively, you could try hooking up all inputs to the TV, and connecting audio out from the TV to the HT. Works best if this connection is digital, for surround.
