Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Philco Console On/Off Switch

I have a 1970's Philco Console which works fine (except the 8 track player) the only little thing is that the on and off switch stopped working.

I can only turn it off when it's in the middle position - not where it says "off".

Is it ok to use it this way?

Any hope for the 8 track player?

It's a Philco console radio, turntable and 8 track. Model H842GMA, Speakers and everything else still work great.

Thank you.

    Thanks much for the reply.

The on/off switch kind of fixed itself once I turned the turntable on, it must have some control connection with the main switch. So now that works.

I can insert an 8 track tape but there is no sound, no power light, nothing happens. I see the belt on the back is quite loose, so maybe that's part of that problem.

Right now I'm having trouble with the tonearm.

Bought a new needle but it is skipping over the record and also have a 'humming noise' from the arm. Adjusting the screw on the back of the arm didn't help.

Platter is spinning, ok and radio works fine!

    Thanks again.

Well, I'm not having too good of luck now.

Managed to break a tiny white wire that goes in to the stylus. It was soldered to a little round metal piece. That's probably causing the humming.

So does that mean get a new arm?

Also, can't seem to get the needle adjusted with the little screw. I've tried everything.

    Thanks for your answers.

It sounds like the knob part has has lost grip on the spindle of the switch, due to age. The knob part is designed to pull off (though sometimes they have an allen screw to keep them on) for service. You could try and pull it off! However it could (due to its age) have decayed and so might break up. If you do try to pull it off, turn it to the off position and when you put it back on put the knob pointer at the off point.
However it is safe to operate at the present.

On the 8 track the fixes and myself would need to know more details. Like: does it play, can you put a tape in etc, before giving a verdict.

The easy bit first! The skipping of the record is caused by too little pressure. Adjust the arm using the screw, if it has numbers use them as a guide. NOTE Make certain that screw adjusts the weight. Sometimes you might have to slide the weight after turning the screw and then locked it back with the screw.

If you adjust the weight it should make the stylus sit on the record nicely without jumping (on a good record). The numbers represent weight in grams. The higher the number the more force will push the stylus down. Ideally you should consult the cartridge instructions for the correct weight, however you can turn it up a bit till the problem stops, if you don't have them. Most track right at 2 to 3 grams (around) For instance if it is at 2 turn it between 2 and 3 and try it! If none of that works then apply a lump of blue tack to the top of the headshell.

Never set it at the highest level as it will wear both record and stylus.

The huming is likely caused by a lose earth lead to the cartridge or a poor conection. Some turntables need a serperate earth lead.

More tricky bit now. The power light is perhaps a 12 volt bulb that has failed, You can work out if the 8-track motor turns and is thus getting power by looking for a switch that will push against the front angled sides of the cartridge. Push it and see if the motor turns. The belt if it looks lose it should be relaced. Once out. Measure the diameter and it's width. You should be able to get one from electrical parts supply shops. I even see people offering belts on E-Bay. The same places apply with the bulb.

On the switch it might have either bent out of place or broken, if you A can't get the motor runing or B the motor runs but not when the cartridge is inserted.

My Nordic track exp2000 treadmill, console turns on but the treadmill is completely unresponsive except, the play button. What do I do

Possible problems include, defective console, defective wire harness or defective Main board(Circuit Board)

If you have an available console to switch your current one out with, please do so to see if it starts working. This way its a sure shot test, if it works then you just need a new console.

If it does not work then you will have to perform a few other tests to fully figure out the problem.

One basic check for the displays of the console not working is as follows:

  • Remove the key from the console and unplug the power cord.
  • Remove the main shroud and locate the reed switch and the magnet on the left side of the pulley.
  • Turn the pulley until the magnet is aligned with the reed switch. Make sure that the gap between the magnet and the reed switch is about 1/8".
  • If necessary, loosen the screw and move the reed switch slightly. Re-tighten the screw.
  • Re-attach the hood and run the treadmill for a couple of minutes.

Hope this helps but if this does not work we would be more than happy to help you out :) by phone 888-713-2880 or by chat at www.sportsmith.net

We look forward to hearing from you! Otherwise, good luck on the repair :)

Need 8 track belt for philco console stereo h843gpc

What you need to do is measure the belt's diameter and also width in MM. You don't have to be spot on with these. Then put the measurements into Google with the words "drive belt XXmm by XXmm".
Drive belts are not specific to one maker, so don't worry about the brand name. Just get the nearest to your measurements.

Norda track t5zi when i press go the motor start for about 1 second and then the screen goes dark and then restarts itself. incline works fine. Bought brand new but I have only used this thing a dozen...

If the console takes batteries, replace them. If this does not work or your console does not require batteries, check the reed switch or optic sensor. Reed Switch: Unplug the treadmill and remove the motor hood cover. The reed switch is mounted on the frame next to the front roller pulley. There is a magnet glued into the front roller pulley. When adjusting the reed switch, make sure it is pointing directly at the magnet. Move the tip of the reed switch within 1/8" of the magnet. Also, check to see that the wire is not damaged, and is connected to the console.
Optic Sensor: Unplug the treadmill and remove the motor hood cover. The optic disk and sensor are located either at the end of the motor or the right hand side of the front roller. The optic disk spins between two sensors on the optic switch. The disk must spin freely without touching either sensor. The sensors can be moved by loosening the adjustment bolt holding the switch to its bracket. The switch can then be slid. Center the disk.
