Question about Briggs & Stratton Garden

6.5 ohv won't run unless you continuosly pump primer. tried carb cleaner. took carb apart and everything looked ok from a jackleg viewpoint. should i rebuild or buy new carb or could it be something else?

Try adjusting fuel intake on the side of carb. just unscrew it a hair and you should be fine.

I have the same problem on a 5HP Briggs, all answers so far point to the jet holes in the Carb Bowl Hold on Screw, remove it and check the side hole and the bottom hole of the jet/hold on bolt, I believe mine used a 13mm size to fit it. I'll try mine again tomorrow good luck.

Bulb doesn't release even with fuel lines disconnected. Completely took carb apart and everything looks good.


If you took off the fuel lines and the primer bulb will not re-inflate than the problem is not the Carb, it is in the lines or in tank fuel filter. Fish the filter out of the tank with a piece of wire to see if that is the issue. Also take each of the lines off of the bulb clean them and try to put some air though them. If they do not let air in easily then that is the problem. The next issue would possibly be the diaphrams located inside the carb, there are two of them and are easily replaced. All the parts to replace those pieces are usually easily found at a local hardware store. Hope this helps.

I have a Craftsman 794774 leaf blower/vac w/25cc engine that won't start.


Many of these small blowers have an alloy key moulded into the flywheel, if this has sheared it will knock the ignition timing out, and will never run.

Tecumseh starts won't idle unless you hold in the choke bulb


If you mean your having to pump the primer bulb to keep it running. Then the main jet is plugged.
1. Take jet(bowl nut) off the bottom of the carb
2. spray carb cleaner through all holes. (up to 4)
3. find a hemming pin and break of the sharp tip, run that through all small holes there may be one hidden in the threads.
4. repeat step 2. and dry with a shot of air( air dusting cans are ok).
These steps are for emissionized carbs( no mixture screws )

I took my toro 6.5 lawnmower carb apart and cleaned, now fuel spurts out of red tube into the air cleaner. Why is this happening?


Sounds like you assembled something wrong when reinstalling the carb. Or your missing a step or two.

Clean you needle/ seat inside carb pull apart and clean all out and try it off the w.w. to see if primer works ,also the primer has a check valve internally also make sure that is working, if the primer won;t pull gas through carb it won;t run 2StrokeJim

I have a yardman 1500 edger (yr 2003) That won't run unless I put fuel into intake,then shuts down. I changed fuel lines, primer & took apart & cleaned carb. No help.\r\n What am I overlooking? ...


make sure the gasket between the carb and cylinder is ok and the carb is not loose. there is a small hole in this gasket to work the pump in the carb by crankcase pulses, make sure this is not restricted or misaligned and is the right way up.
failing that you will need a carb rebuild kit, these cost very little and are a service item. i change them with every machine service.

11A600 Briggs Series engine, Only runs without Air cleaner installed, with it on, have to keep feeding it fuel, with primer bulb, no fuel being normally tranfered to engine via normal carb induction....


There is other passages in carburator that maybe causing the problem. If you would like i can look at it and see what it would take to fix it. Ethenal got in carb and caused a clog it jets or in bowl nut but without looking at it. I cant really help to much on it.

Hi there, The manual primer is a pump and relies on its ability to deform and revert back to it's original shape in order to pull fuel from the tank, through the carb and into the primer bowl when released and pump what's in the bowl back to tank when pressed. The system uses one or lately two valves in the primer body to achieve this pumping action. It looks like your looking in the right area (running only on choke is a clue too) as I suspect that you have a blockage on the suction side ie anywhere between the fuel filter and the primer bowl. It is possible that the fuel lines are collapsing internally under vacuum closing off the fuel supply. Another area to look is the carb itself. You've probably discovered that there is a filter in the carb body on the fuel pump side under the diaphragm - this an extremely fine mesh and can give the appearance of being clean when in fact gummed up. This filter feeds the needle valve which in turn allows fuel into the metering section and then into the air stream via the mixture control screws for high and low speed (H & L) It is possible that the needle valve is sticking and thus also restricting fuel supply. When cleaning carbs out don't use carb cleaner - sounds odd, I know, but most carb cleaners are unsuitable for diaphragm carbs, OK sparingly for the outside but not the inside unless it says on the tin that is safe for diaphragm carbs. Use Brake and Clutch cleaner. Happy hunting !

CARB CLEANER FOR CARS WILL WORK JUST FINE,BUT YOU MIGHT HAVE TRASH IN THE BOWL.IF SO YOU WILL HAVE TO TKE THE CARB APART
