Central air conditioner won't stay running

Our central airconditioner was installed in 1993. it was working just fine yesterday and today it shut off. now and then it starts up but immediately shuts it's self off. we have lived here 12 years and never have added freeon. any idea's>

Sounds like it cycles on either head pressure or low pressure. If you have a Carrier unit it has both controls. Is your outside fan running. Is your condensor dirty. A unit that old needs to checked bby a service tech. Remember freon does just go away. If he puts gas in your unit there is leak. HINT Ask for free estimate on repair before it is fixed. The compressor is trying to start and cannot... change the capacitor and if that don't work then the compressor is bad...

My heater won;t work


check induction fan motor first...then check the rubber tube and the switch it ataches too. this switch should close if the induction motor is running...but also...it HAS to be open before start up.

Central air


Most thermostats have a setting for the fan called, "manual". That keeps the fan on continuously. The electronic thermostats can fail in a "fan on" condition. That would require a new thermostat. I also saw one air conditioner with a fan relay welded "on" by electrical surge. That would require a new relay.

I have a 3 ton a/c system that removes about 5-6 gallons of water from the air per day. Most portable dehumidifiers/air-conditioners rate at approx 1/2 to 3/4 of a ton. Your water output is pretty much normal.
