Try this but be careful to find the exact key as not to do damage!

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

Quit Registry Editor.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

TEAC CD/DVD problems

Hmm, sounds different to the usual problems I've come across but try this:
Paste the following into a new text document and "Save As..." type "All Files (*.*)" and call it "DVD Fix.bat"

REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" /v "UpperFilters /f > NUL
ECHO Press any key to restart the computer.
Shutdown.exe -r -t 0 -f -c "UpperFilters reg key removed to fix CD/DVD-ROM" -d p:2:3

Run the file and restart your computer when prompted.

If you're trying to write to a blank disc, make sure in the drive's properties that you have recording/burning enabled. If you do, try re-installing your CD/DVD burning suite. If you didn't have one, try a system restore.

If this doesn't work or you've disable system restore, you can go into hardware manager and roll-back the driver. If you don't have a roll-back available. uninstall the driver and restart your computer. A default Windows driver should then install.

Check the drive is physically performing - does it load/eject the disc? Does it spin-up? Are you able to read any discs?
I you have any further problems, it would help if we had the model name of your laptop.

Problem is that my DVD combo TEAC-DW-224E-A reads cds but not DVD kindly help

Download VLC (google it) for free, see if that plays the dvd. Most likely your player has an issue, VLC plays ANYTHING (pretty much!) without issue.

If that doesnt work then you'll have a problem with the actual drive.

Teac dw-224e-a dvd rom will not read dvd +r -rw data

Here's the newest driver for your burner. Go to Control Panel, then Device Manager, then click on the + symbol next to disk drives, and double click on the TEAC device. Click the Driver tab and press Update Driver, then choose the 'Let me find the driver' option, and navigate to the folder where you unzipped the file to. Double click and Install. Reboot.

For burning, I would recommend Nero, Alcohol 120% or ImgBurn.

Good luck and Season's Greetings!

Non-system disk or disk error

Is you cd-rom drive shot - are you trying to boot up your computer through an xp or windows cd? If it is, it's not going to recognize and boot up. You'd be best getting a new drive - look around for someone with a Compaq Evo 800cp. They have the same exact cd-rom drive. Here are your compatible cd-rom devices:
or a Compaq DVD-ROM DRN-8080B
otherwise try a HP SD-C2612. I have these three drives. They all work really well.

toshiba terca m1 can the teac dw-224e-36 drive be replaced with a dvd burner drive? thanks, brent 732-754-3371 The problem with replacing the original CD drive in these notebook computers appears to be a serious "large-scale" problem. When you replace the CD drive with another Manufacturer and/or Model the Recovery CD and associated software can't find the exact drive ID its looking for. It then refuses to proceed with the software reload to bring itself online and function properly. This is called "forcing the customer to come to the original manufacturer only" policy and paying whatever they demand to get a replacement that will work properly with all the original system CD's. I'm sure the Boot EPROM has the DW-224E-36 ID burnt into it to ensure it doesn't load alternate drivers. We all hate to pay $150 - $190 for a drive we know cost approximately $20 - $30 to make. When you make 5,000 to 15,000 of anything every week, the actual manufacturing cost gets incredibly low. I've been chasing an answer to this problem for a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 system needing a functional DW-224E-36 DVD ROM CD R/W drive because it won't read the Recovery DVD to load the software onto a new HardDrive. The Notebook is literally "like new" but the HardDrive and CDROM drive are disfunctional due to overheating. The cooling airway pathway was totally blocked with "lint" and the owner never thought to have a professional look at the system. I wish us all "good luck" finding a seller that is satisfied making a "reasonable profit". All I've thus far been able to find are sellers wanting to triple, quadruple or 6X their money on anyone that relies solely on a notebook computer. Toshiba wants $188 for a replacement. Then add state tax and shipping to pay over $200. This is outrageous for this product and the PC owner will probably have to throw the unit away as she can't afford it. $100 for a new hard drive, $200 for a new CD drive, $100 for a new battery and $100 for 1GB of new RAM (remove 2ea-256MB small DIMM's and replace with 2ea 512MB small DIMM's). This doesn't have any labor included with the costs. I'm doing the repair as a friend to the owner's family. $400 is minimum to cover the "need", the extra RAM is a "want". The real loser's are the PC owner and the world we live in because we have another 10-14 lbs of "electronic & plastic scrap" to bury in a hole somehere and she has to figure out how to fulfill her computer needs affordably. Goood Luck to all. JRCjr 12-28-08 (I would appreciate whomever owns this website to not make my email address viewable by the general public). Should someone have a better answer I am open to suggestions.
