Question about Belkin (F5D7230-4) Router (587009)

1 Answer

Very short range of wireless network

We have a Belkin Wireless G router type: F5D7230-4. It connects two main computers and two laptops, one of which is a Mac. We are going to connect a third laptop eventually. At the moment we are having difficulty with the range. Our laptops connection is very iffy. Usually we have to move them within about ten meters of the router. According to the catalogue the router should have a range of 400 feet.
Please point us in the right direciton.

Re: Very short range of wireless network

Your Belkin Wireless router being an RX/TX device follows the basic rules of radio communication:
1. LOS - line of sight range; anything in between the router and the laptops such as doors, walls, drapes, foliage is an obstacle that reduces the signal strength to a certain degree;
2. Height is might, the higher the router the better;
3. Antenna, the more exposed the further the range. Internal antennas such as in most laptops reduce both receive and transmit. Likewise, placing the router in a shelf or cabinet reduces antenna exposure. How you position (orient the antenna also plays a role in coverage. Some materials will reflect radio signals and change antenna radiation pattern.

A few things you can try to improve coverage:
a. Mount the router to the highest practical position;
b. ensure that there are no obstruction between router and laptop;
c. position router to approximate practical center between two furthest laptops;
d. install an external antenna if the Belkin would allow;
e. Replace the F5D7230-4 with another with more punch such as a LinkSys WRT300N; and/or
f. In really extreme range, install repeaters.

Hope this be of some help/idea. pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

I have belkin connect n150 and i have two laptops my one laptop is connect to wireless but the one laptop cant access to wireless it says no wireless network were found in range..

If your message is like this " no wireless network found in range make sure wireless on the computer is On". All you need to do is look for the wireless switch usually located on the side or the back of your laptop. Sometimes its near the F keys or start button. You may check your laptop manual to see where to locate the wireless switch , or you can check the laptop manufacturers website usually they gave information on where to locate or enable the wireless feature of laptop.

Hi I have just installed a brand new Belkin wireless router and it works great with all computers and laptops in the family (including Apple products) apart from my daughters laptop...she has a toshiba...

Check the main computer you set up the network router may need to go to the network status and tasks in control on this...then you will see a map of all the network devices connected...find the belkin router and click on this window there should be a tab called wireless this...the wireless properties first page should have the wireless SSID name listed here...and if you click the security tab then the security type and network key are displayed here..You need to write down the SSID, security type, and network key and make sdure the toshiba laptop setting for the wireless network are exactly the same. There may be a link on the first page of the wireless securities saying copy to usb can use this to copy all network settings to and then transfer these settings in to the toshiba by using the network setup wizard.

I am using a Belkin router and I cannot connect to Internet

If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work?
If that works then the modem is working.
Now connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
You will need to open the set up page of the router to check the settings of the router.
You can set up the router without the CD also.
It is very easy.

What is the Operating system on the laptop ?
If it is XP then in the bottom right hand corner you will find Wireless network connection ( looks like 1 computer monitor). Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is windows Vista, then in the bottom right hand corner you will find 2 computer monitor icon. Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is Windows 98/ME/2000 then use the adapter utility to connect to the wireless network.
For MAC you will see the AIRPORT icon at the top.

Check the wireless settings of the router first . Make sure that yopu have all the wireless settings of the router. If you are not sure about the settings, then open the router set up and check the settings.

Cannot connect new laptop to wireless network. Belkin Wireless N

The wireless settings on the laptop and the router should match. To check the settings on the router you need to access the setup page by typing in a web browser's address bar.

By default the password is blank.

Click the Wireless tab. And take note of the SSID or wireless network name.

Go to Security, then Wireless. If the wireless security is enabled, copy the network key or security key.

On the wireless computer, you should detect SSID and if wireless security is enabled, connect to it with the correct security keys.

Hope this helps! Good luck!
