Question about LaCie (300740) 160 GB Hard Drive
I have had this LaCie drive for many years now and it has never given me problems however now when I plug it in (power cord is fine) the icon shows up on my desktop, I can open it and browse a few files, but then it freezes and I have to restart the entire computer to do anything after that. This problem began after I installed a new hard drive on my macbook and it prevented me from doing a complete restore (it froze 1/2 through the process). I will probably buy a new external anyway (something more portable) however all of my old files, pictures, etc. are trapped on this external. Help!

if it is a USB (or you have low disc space), it does take longer to show up on desktop and patience is required... on my iBook it takes over a minute for my Brick to show up... Whether it is USB or firewire, do try another cord (I had similar problem with my lacie firewire external... I used a different firewire cord and all was fine. If you have tried these already, I hope you find the answer... good luck

This happened to me as well - i have been reading that it could be the power supply adaptor. If you can try another one - it might solve the problem. The adaptors seem to either be faulty or made to stop working. Great news for us the consumer!!

Simplest solution: back up the data on the drive and repartition it (which will wipe it). Otherwise it sounds like it could be a problem with the file tree or structure of the drive, the configuration files could be corrupt, some program could have stored temporary files in a hidden place that cannot be deleted without making the program delete them, etc. If you are on a mac, spotlight Disk Utility and use it to repartition. If you are on a PC use the search thing from the start menu and find a program called disk management (or something similar to that, you'll know it when you see it.) external drives are annoying. i kick mine into the wall periodically for good measure.

Try connecting the Lacie to another computer, if it doesn't work then the hard disk may need to be formatted using Disk Manager. I suggest you format as a primary partition in FAT32.
If it doesn't work then it is possible that the hard drive in the Lacie has failed.
To test the hard drive, remove it and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port. If it deosn't detect it as an external drive and you connot open folders and files then it is faulty.
You can install a new hard drive in the Lacie and then format in FAT32
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Have a look in disk management for the drive.
Start > Run > type 'diskmgmt.msc'
If the drive is there and has a blue bar, try changing the drive letter.
If the drive is there, but has a black bar, you will need to recover your data with a recovery software (option - recuva recovery software) and then repartition the drive.
If the drive isn't there at all, you may need to try another USB port, another cable or even another computer.
If none of these options help, you may have to contact Lacie for your support options (possible replacement).
