The optical lens assembly has failed. you will need to replace this assembly asap to restore normal reading functions.

My PS3 will recognise discs, but will not play movies or games.

You're blu-ray drive has partially died. It's a three part laser (cd, dvd, blu-ray). The most important part of yours has died that's why you can still play dvd and PS2 games because they use the dvd laser and not the blu-ray.

send it into sony its fried i have the same problem but no money for repairs since i dont have the recept... i woulda been better off with microsoft...

hold the power button down when it is red till you hear the quick beeps then select the file restore this is a diagnostics menu..remember you have to hold the power button down till you see a menu that youve probably never seen
