Question about Craftsman 24 Hp 48" Deck Yard Tractor

Blades won't engage. OK-I need a pto clutch

Blades won't engage. OK-I need a pto clutch switch. So is it the switch or the entire assembly unit. One person quoted me $250.00 for the unit. Seems like an awful lot just for a switch.

A switch should only be about $25. Before you spring for a new PTO assembly, take your switch out and take it to a shop and have it tested. I may just be a bad switch. Don't bother taking it to Sears though. Take it to a shop that works on Husqvarna and/or Poulan Pro. (Both basically same as Craftsman). DO take the model number from under the seat with you.

Electric clutch wont engage when when switched on even though I can hear a clicking sound at the clutch.

PTO Clutch will not stay engaged.
There is a very fine one page discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:

http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:
  • Resistance 3.7 ohms
  • Current Draw 3.25 amps.
It does not give the air gap. It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
  • Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

Pull switch on blades but they won't engage worked fine until i got stuck in some mud now won't engage

Blades would not turn after I got stuck in mud. Electric clutch.

  • Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  • Check for physical damage; anything look bent?
  • Is the deck belt intact?
  • Spin the pulley on the bottom of the clutch. Does it spin freely?
  • There could be mud or grit stuck in the clutch.
  • There is a drive key between the clutch and the shaft. Has this key been sheared?
  • When you pull the PTO switch does the clutch make a "click"? It's possible the clutch was burnt out during the mud incidence.

Ariens model 915111. Blades will not engage. Using a light voltage device. I placed the probe inside the socket which was connected to the pto clutch and it lit up. Can you tell me what part needs

If your receiving power at the PTO clutch and it is the correct voltage ie. 12vdc then you will need a new PTO clutch assembly.

What causes fuse to blow every time I try to engage blades?

To engage the blades is it a knob to an electric switch that you pull?
If so does the wire from the switch activate a electric clutch?
Is the wire damaged and shorted to the frame, is the clutch shorted. If you provide the brand name and model number I might be able to find a schematic for your mower.

Video shows an electric clutch but yours may be different but this should give you an idea of where to look. Riding Mower Electric PTO Clutch Won Engage When Hot Problem Fix

On john deere la150, if i sit on seat and engage blades,,,nothing, but when i lift of seat, blades engage and motor shuts off. Replaced seat switch and did not fix problem

"On john deere la150, if i sit on seat and engage blades,,,nothing, but when i lift of seat, blades engage and motor shuts off. Replaced seat switch and did not fix problem" Okay, what I'm hearing is that "nothing" means the blades-driving PTO won't engage (declutch) when you switch on mower; but then, (say) as you start to dismount the mower (seat) the mower (drive clutch) engages even as the deadman switch (seat switch) kills the engine (and the drive/pto shaft starts to slow down. The key here seems to be that at full engine torque the clutch is unable to remain engaged but, rather, slips so that mower blade inertia (resistence) cannot be overcome...but as engine/pto rotation slows the clutch is able not to slip. First place to consider is the clutch gap which is probably to0 large (possibly from wear and tear, possibly not). So check specs and how-to from manual or factory and reset the pto drive clutch gap...not hard to do. If clutch gap is not the problem then most likely rehab or replacement of the clutch assy will be needed...is the mower has many years use sufficient to wear out the clutch. Another possiblity is an electic (wring/switching/grounding) problem involving mower and deadman switches.

I think i may need to replace the pto clutch on my stx38...is it difficult to do? Also, how can i best determine whether it is the pto clutch or perhaps the switch that activates the clutch. currently,...

Depending on the age of the mower, it sounds like a wire has wiggled lose, or the switch itself has gone bad. I would check the wiring to the switch and to the pto clutch and ensure that all wires are secure, free of corrosion. If this still doesn't fix the issue, install new switch. This appears to be entirely and electrical issue, and is a cheaper troubleshooting method before tearing down the pto engagement system.
