we had one of these and found out the battery inside had failed. the battery is none replaceable. did try to replace it but it lost its memory and was only good as a switch. think when the battery fails it loses it memory and things start going wrong. so would say change it. now thinking on it should of changed the battery why having the old one on and taken the old one off after installing the new one.
A basic thermostat such as this will only have 3-5 wires that are used on it. First, shut off the power to your furnace, usually by a switch close to it, or with the breaker for it. Red will go to the R terminal, White to the W, Green to the G. Some techs will use blue for the Y terminal, or yellow if it's available, if blue or black is left over and you have a C terminal on your Thermostat, place it there. Hope this helps.
Most base board heaters installation instructions say to attach to the wall with screws which are slack ( not fully tightened) in order to allow the heater case to expand and contract otherwise you get a clicking noise
