This usually is cause when the computer cannot find the boot program on you HDD. But there are other causes also. Before going to the boot program let's check other things first. Your primary boot sequence in the CMOS setup is not set to you primary HDD and the computer looks for the boot system in the CD/DVD/Blueray disk drive or USB and couldn't find any boot program. But normally it would skip those and go to your primary HDD. But if you have those CD/DVD or a USB stick, external HDD plugged in then remove them and try rebooting again. If that doesn't work, than you have a defective HDD. Check your HDD, try recovering with windows recovery disk. Worst thing, Reinstall windows again, install new HDD and reinstall windows.
Sorry for the later suggestions.
Good luck

SOURCE: dell inspiron 8000 without operating system

First, if you are still running Vista on your desktop then you will need to buy a license for the laptop. Does the laptop have a WinXP on it now? If so, go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor. If not, determine the hardware specifications of your laptop and go here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/system-requirements.aspx Compare your laptops specs to those listed for the version of Vista you wish to install.

SOURCE: How do I restore my dell inspiron 2650 to factory

If your system is PC Restore Equipped, it will show show a black page with a blue bar across the top after the Dell Splash Screen. the bar will have www.dell.com in White letters. If you see this page for about a second during the boot process, the system is PC Restore Equipped. At the page with the blue bar, press CTRL+F11 and that will initiate the restore process. Providing the image is not damaged, then restore process takes about 20 to 30 minutes and will return the system to out of box configuration. If there are any errors or if the PC Restore page is not available, then you'll have to do a clean install of Windows using the Dell Windows XP CD that came with the system, then load drivers and applications.

Got Dell Inspiron 2650 2002 from a friend, free. Want to restore to factory settings. How? Installed Windows XP and Norton Anti Virus

Hi and welcome to fixya!

There are two ways to restore this machine to factory settings;

First is thru the Recovdery partition in the hard disk itself:

  • 1 Close any windows currently open and click the Inspiron's "Start" button. Select "Shut Down" and choose the "Restart" option.
  • 2 Tap "F8" when the Dell image appears on the screen. Continue tapping the key until the advanced boot menu loads.
  • 3 Scroll down to "Repair Your Computer" and press "Enter" to access the DataSafe local backup screen. Click "Next." Select "Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options."
  • 4 Click the "Restore without preserving new or changed files" radio button and click "Next." Click "Next" three more times and click "Restart" to restore the disk drive to its original condition. Follow the on-screen prompts to set your operating system settings.

If the hdd was already repartitioned or corrupted, the second option should work:

  • 1 Insert the Dell recovery disk in your Inspiron's optical drive and close the "AutoPlay" window when it appears. Shut down any other open programs. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
  • 2 Tap "F2" as soon as the Dell image appears on the laptop's screen. Scroll to the "CD-ROM" option and press "Enter." Tap any key when you see the "Press any key to boot" option.
  • 3 Press "Enter" when the setup screen appears. Press "F8" and highlight the Dell's hard drive partition. Press "Enter."
  • 4 Follow the instructions on the screen to choose the Inspiron's operating system options. Click "Finish" and remove the recovery disk from the optical drive. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
Hope this helps!

When i turn my dell laptop on it tells me that operating system not found and thats all i can get it to do

The window software has corrupt files or the hard drive has issues. If you have a recovery disc try and re-install the operational system on your hardware, if this fails remove the hard drive and re-seat it back in place and repeat. If you still can't get it to respond the hard drive is more than likely bad and probably should be replaced. "but it would not hurt to have it tested"

I can not restore my inspiron 2650 to its fatory settings

There are several ways to restore your Dell PC to factory settings.
Are you looking to just undo something that happened a day or two ago and not loose any data?
You can try the windows system restore.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
The other option is to back up your data and pics then while your laptop is booting up hit Shift and F11 repeatly and follow the dell system restore prompts.

Here is the XP instructions:

Here are the Vista instructions:

How do I reinitialize my Dell Inspiron 2650?

You should have a CD that says something like OEM CD. Or OPERATING SYSTEM. Put that disc in and reboot your PC. You should see a prompt to press any key to boot from CD. Press enter and follow the prompts to reinstall your operating system... If you don't have that CD you'll need to purchase one from the store or look at installing a free Operating System like Linux. Option 3 (less likely) You have a recovery partition installed and you should see a prompt during boot up that says "press F10 to start recovery" in this case all of the information on that CD is store in that partition on your HD.
