have the GE Monogram ZISB480 side by side.Once again I have your same problem of the freezer freezing (good), but
the refrig does not go below 45-50.All
the official repair guy did was do a quick 1 hour defrost.I did that also just two weeks ago and it was
fine. Now it is not cold enough
again.I just looked in the freezer
using a mirror I was able to push a 2"x2" trap door open towards the
fridge.It must be automated and
malfunctioning.Why the heck the repair
guy didn't work on that?This week I'll
call for another repair job ($85 for him to just come to my door) and ask him
to fix the trap door. -Bob
At the refrig controls , the freezer control , controls how much air goes into the refrigerator section . Open the refrig door , and up at the top left , put your hand over the damper (air vent) . Turn the freezer control from high to low , and feel the difference in the air flow . If you turn your freezer control to a lower setting , less cold air will enter the refrig . Think of it as : the freezer control adjusts the temperature , and the refrig control , tells how long to run the compressor . In actuality , this is how it works . However , with the dial (refrigerator thermostat) in the off position and refrig still running , this indicates a bad thermostat . Pt # 2198202 .
I have seen this happen so many times with all appliances.
First, I think it’s important to know that the Ref side has no cooling coils, it’s basically a box and the cold air in the freezer is blown over by a fan through a channel into the Ref side. This channel has a door which regulates how much cold air goes through. You probably have two control knobs in the Ref side, one controls the temp with numbers 1-9, 9 being the coldest. This temp control tells the compressor how long to run. The other control is for that little door and it may have letters A-E, E being the coldest. If you set it on E (coldest) then this will close that little door and keep most the cold air in the freezer. The settings may both be numbers however, they work the same way as described above.
Now, why is that cold air not getting over to the Ref side? 1. The little door is not open. check your control setting. You should be able to feel air coming through the channel on the Ref side.
2. The fan in the freezer is not working. You can hear this fan running when you open the freezer.
3. The coils on the freezer side are clogged with ice which won't let the fan circulate the air over to the Ref side. This is a failure of the defrost system but, this would also cause the freezer side to not get cold after 2 weeks.
unplug the machine and let it completely defrost with the doors open overnight. then try it. if it still does not get cold then you know it is a more serious problem, like a compressor $300+
if it works for a couple days then freezes up again then you know it is a defrost problem, less serious problem <$100
put a thermometer in the refrigerator and one in the freezer to see what it reads each day when you had the freezer open it it coses it to work harder like having an air conditioner on with the window open it has to work harder to keep it cold so by recording them temp to see if its dropping or it stays the same you might have to get it looked at but for just getting it a week ago it should not have hurt anything just leaving it open a little bit might just be normal for it to be hot i have a side by side and the side is hot but not to hot just warm. let me know hope that helps
