Sounds like the brake pedal switch is bad. When you step on the brake pedal with the key on you should hear a click

2001 pontiac Aztck wont go into gear

The problem with mine was the gear shifter lock solenoid was broke. Inside the cup holder (the one closest to seats) is a slide door about a !/2" wide by 2" long. slide that up and inside you will see a white disc. With a tool that can reach it, pull it towards the passenger seat and it will allow you to push the gear shifter button in to shift. This is a temporary fix and will have to be repeated each time you want to put car in gear.

Having trouble getting button on side of gear shift pushed in to put vehicle put in gear. sometimes takes like 5 minutes to get released stared all at once

try and push the gear shifter forward like you are forcing it into park. while holding pressure on it try pushing the button in, and make sure your foot is on the brake pedal. Some cars have a safety feature that requires the brakes to be depressed before you can shift into drive.

Shift gear is stuck on park and can't get it out of gear.

Hi there,

There are multiple things that must all happen in order for the shifter to move from park.

1. Make sure the key ignition switch is in the "Run" position (the position just before the "start" position).

2. Brake pedal is depressed (usually pushed in a couple of inches or more at least to release the button on the shifter).

3. Push in the button on the shifter and pull back (you may need to push the shifter slightly forward or back a little for the button to move freely).

If the button on the shifter still doesn't push in freely, there is a problem with the mechanical lock-out linkage or electronic switch that releases the button lock. Check under the dash area along the brake pedal arm for anything that doesn't look correct.

4. If the car is on an incline/slope/hill, it will put a lot of pressure on the parking pin in the transmission. Usually a strong tug or pull on the shifter will pull it out while you're pushing on the brake pedal to prevent rolling when it releases. Make sure to set the parking/emergency brake first to prevent this next time .

Good Luck!!

Thanks

My new duplicated key screwed up my gears!

When you say "Push the button", I am assuming that you are talking about the button in front of the shifter, yes?

If so, the problem that you have is a "shift interlock" problem.

Try this. Start the car, and have someone stand at the back of the car. Push the brake pedal.
Ask them if the brake lights come on. If not, you have a bad brake lamp fuse, or a bad brake lamp switch above the brake pedal. The brake light circuit ALSO puts power to the shifter interlock so you can take it out of park. No power to the shifter interlock; you will need to push the button. Doubt that the duplicate key has anything to do with this.
Hope this helps. Please consider good feedback for this solution.
