Hard buttons work
This is probably due to a bad LCD connection, I just fixed a remote with the same problem
disassemble the unit, 4 screws on the back to remove the back cover, then one screw near the top inside to remove the circuit board. Pull off the blue edge bezel around the LCD (watch the clip on the right side near the hard buttons). Above the LCD is a Flexi cable with 4 pins- use a screwdrive or awl to make several indentations on those pads and then press down on each one for a second or two with a soldering iron
that cleared it right up for me...
