SOURCE: Number 2 in upper right hand corner of screen
Had this problem also when I rebooted my Time Warner Cable box. Unplug everything from the wall including power strip and wait 60 seconds then plug back in and turn everything back on. Worked for me and havent had a problem since. Time Warner does not know what causes this yet.

Had the same problems. Rebooted the box and the 2 was gone. Hope this works.

Change up your connection. If you have a cable/satellite box, get rid of that coax cable connection and use red white and yellow RCA cables to connect and that will take care of the problem. if you dont have a cable box(but i bet you do), you will need to run your cable through another device because you cant do anything to turn that off. another device such as a vcr, cable box, or a converter box. hope that takes care of it, good luck 2u

Please make sure that the connections are secure.
If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, remove it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.
Please try connecting the TV to a different wall outlet and check if that helps.
SOURCE: Panasonic viera has flashing channel info in upper left corner
I had this exact same issue just yesterday. Channel info would flash
intermittently. While set was in this mode, could not enter menu,
change channels, etc. from remote or front panel controls. Similar to tjh492, I thought it might be an
overheating issue. But unplugging the Viera and waiting for set to cool
made no difference.
I then remembered that this issue popped up the instance I surfed to a
particular channel (FWIW, 26-3 "Me Too" on Comcast here in Aurora,
Illinois, USA). I had a hunch that there might be an issue with the
signal on the channel that prevented the Viera from properly syncing,
so I decided to unplug the antenna cable. Once I did that, the channel info
displayed steady. I was then able to change channels (of course screen
was blank as antenna cable was unplugged) and enter the Viera menu. I
immediately went to channel set-up and manually removed channel 26-3
from the channel list. After reconnecting cable, Viera was back to
normal. Since I'm not a big fan of "Me Too", problem solved :)
Not sure why a digital channel sync issue would effectively make the
Viera remote and front panel controls inoperable. Pure speculation, but it could
be that the Viera microprocessor was overloaded trying to sync to channel and this prevented any interrupts from remote or front panel
controls.
