Question about Kenmore Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

All knobs are in the off position but the right front burner is HOT like on high. Had to unplug the stove. HELP! I let it cool down and plugged it in again and it went right back to high heat. Double front right burner only the small area inside is doing that.

WOW...thanks for the quick reply. Ok...looks like we are off to find a new element. Is this something we can do ourselves or do we need service for this?

  • jean861 Jun 24, 2009

Ok surface switch. Is that also known as a 'potentiometer'? I am looking at all the parts listed on documents for this appliance and cannot find 'surface switch'.

  • jean861 Jun 25, 2009

You know what is sad...I tried popping in the number that is printed on the user manual and I got 'there is no such model' or something to that effect.

I put a call into Sears today and told them what you had suggested it may be and they are scheduled to come out on Monday. I thank you for telling me what you think it is so atleast they can make sure they have parts on the truck. Atleast that is what the woman on the phone told me?

When I know what they did I'll come back here and post for historical purposes.

Until then, I am getting very creative with cooking :D

No worries! When I guessed that was the true name and saw the location of it I knew it was time to make the call to have a pro come in and do it :)

Update. When I called for the appointment I gave the rep the part number on the phone and was told that info would be added to the call sheet. The service rep showed yesterday and did not have the part, did not even attempt to figure out if that was infact the problem and asked me for $109 bux. I said no. I got the part myself today and installed it. It is not that part. Plugged in the range and the dual burner is still on high without even being turned on. Could it be the mother board/circuit board? Calling them again and hope to get someone else here. This is ridiculous.

Your switch for that element is bad and must be replaced.
The contacts inside the switch are welded together.

    Not an element...a surface SWITCH.

Sorry to have missed the response you posted earlier.
Too late now, but, yes, it is a potentiometer.

Sears Kenmore gas stove, the front left and the left and right rear burners turn on when the knob is turned to the lite position. The right front burner doesn't turn on when put lite position. N

If there is no clicking sound like you hear when you turn on the other burners than I'm going to say that either the electrode is bad or the spark switch, which is what you turn to turn on the burner to begin with. Both parts are cheap so it may be a good maintenance thing to change all of the burners. Make sure you have your model and go to and order both parts, and if you don't need one send it back for a full refund even if you installed it. good luck

I have a Whirlpool electric range RF263LXTQ2- 2 yrs old-it gets so hot that the large burner pans are both charred black. Had it looked at about a year ago and couldn't find any problem-top and front of...

Since you are having problems with multiple elements the problem is probably the circuit board that controls them. This can be ordered and replaced. Be sure to unplug the stove before getting into the circuit board though.

Hotpoint Glasstop Stove - Burner turns on by itself

I have a GE stove which I purchased in 2004, and it is doing the same. I heard beeping coming from the kitchen in the middle of the night . I went to the kitchen and the oven was on by itself. I have been unplugging it when not using it. Maybe this could be a recall.

Right front electric stove is stuck on high without shutting off, regardless if knob is switched to off. Needed to unplug the stove completely from electricity.

it depends on the model and manufacturer of your stove .. some have solid state relays that could be shorted (usually computer controlled stove) or a conventional relay (for cycling) that may have a stuck contact .. if its a conventiional stove with spiral cooking surface (not smoothtop) .. then you can make sure the burner is not hot and the stove is unplugged .. then you can simply lift and pull the burner out of its socket .. that will get you working temporarily on the other burners until ;you can fix the problem .. that burner could have an internal short to ground .. easy to check with an ohm meter or by substitution of one of the other burners .. if another burner does the same thing then suspect the relay or control switch ... if the substitute burner works properly then replace the defective one ..

Whirlpool electric range burner exploded ''on'' light on always

Hi There,
While the stove is unplugged remove the bad burner from the stove and set the bad burner's control knob to the "OFF" position. Now plug the stove back in. If there is a problem it should trigger the breaker and shut off the stove. If you are not comfortable doing this you might want to ask someone.
The explosion was due to a shorted burner element and once it is removed there shouldn't be any more problems. I hope this was helpful and I hope you get your stove going again.

Burner on range will not turn off

Look at the back of your range there should be schemetic for your power control board. look for defective burner wire going into relay. There should be 5 relays in rows. Realy is the problem. I had the same problem with my front left burner stuck on high.
After replacing everything works okay.

Burner will not turn off

I would first check the infinite control switch (#WB24T10029) the part the knob slips onto. The next thing I'd check is the erc (#WB27T10231) control board. Hope that is helpful!
