Water Pressure problem with our refrigerator

We have been having problems with our water coming out really slow in our refrigerator's water dispenser. We had a repair man come out to look at it and he suggested that we call a plumber because when our house was built they put a cheap self tapping valve in and also there is too much excess hose behind the refrigerator. Will changing the valve make a big difference in the pressure and will this be expensive to do? Thank you!

Re: Water Pressure problem with our refrigerator

Yes, the self tapping valves are not to be used on refrigerators for this very reason. It will also lead to icemaker problems with the low pressure. You need a drill type saddle valve which can be installed in the same place as the current valve. The only difference is you drill a 1/4" hole in the pipe. It will work with the current hose. You could have a plumber do it but may cost up to $100. It is easy to do and the new valve usually costs anywhere from $8-$12.

Water dispenser running slowly

Hello Cynthia;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You have a water pressure problem. You need at least 60 PSI water pressure to open the solenoid valves. I suspect you are getting small ice cubes.

If you have well water you are not going to get the pressure for fully dispenser flow.

I have experienced bad water filters. One time our techs received a large shipment of bad water filters. Remove the water filter and test the water dispenser.

With low water pressure you may not want to use a water filter

Why would the water be coming out really slow in my refrigerator

your water filter or lines to and from the water supply to the filter and to the dispenser can be plugged with lime, also if you use a saddle tap from the water line in the house feeding the dispenser hose they can plug up with lime also

Slow water flow from the water dispenser

If it was fast at one point there are a couple of things that come to mind. Make sure your water line is not kinked at any point behind the frig. Also, when was the last time you changed your filter? Dirty water filters can cause low water pressure. Let me know if I can help further, good luck! :D

Front door dispenser

Low water pressure will cause this symptom. Make sure you have a minimum of 35 pounds pressure supplying the refrigerator with water.

Ge profile refrigerator slow water dispenser

you have a seperate valve for ice maker and water dispenser, though it is possible both could have debris preventing proper water flow, i would check the water pressure you have going into the valve solenoid housing. turn off water to fridge, disconnect the line at the fridge, not in basement at saddle valve. place end of tube in bucket, turn on water. how is pressure? good or slow? if its good, then you probably do need to replace valve solenoid housing. You can NOT clear debris out of these, they must be replaced.
If your water pressure is still not good, either y ou have a kink in plastic water line. Despite having changed saddle valve in basement, if the stem of saddle valve is mounted on bottom half of pipe, debris from pipe is getting into water line and so on. Ge side by side refrigerator/freezer. Water flow is very slow from water dispenser. I have changed the water filter but water flow is still very slow. What might the problem be?

Could be low water pressure coming into the refrigerator or some kind of partial blockage in the water tubing within the refrigerator. I would first check at the on-off valve that connects the house water to the refrigerator tubing. Turn off the valve, disconnect it from the refrigerator line, hold the valve over a bucket, and open the valve. Does the water flow look good? The openings in these valves are very small and are easily stopped up with mineral deposits.

If the water flow is good at the valve, the problem is somewhere within the refrigerator tubing. I have found that plastic weedeater line is good for opening up blockages in these lines.

Water dispenser is just a trickle

the biggest culprit for slow water dispensing aside from the filter is the water supply its self. check to make sure the water line isnt kinked behind the refrig, if thats ok then disconnect the water line from the refrig and run water into a bucket and observe your water flow. good water pressure would basicly fill a 2 gallon bucket in less than a minute. much less than that can cause problems. hope that helps peyton
