I have a brother MFC - 8640D - I get a large clicking noise when I turn on the printer, and then I get paper jams - and when it goes to print, it makes the same loud noise..What is problem?

    Guru,

The grinding noise is there even with the toner and drum taken out. It appears the paper comes up through the toner, but the paper gets stuck in the toner area - and the roller taking the paper up to the final tray is not working.

Make sure that the paper guides in your paper tray are not holding the paper too tight against the front of the tray, there should be about 1/16 inch play so that the paper can be lifted to the roller easily. Also take out your toner and drum and turn it on, if the grinding noise is gone you may need a new toner, some refilled toners are too tight to turn properly.

If the noise is still there and paper jams at the rear, it sounds like one of the fuser gears has broken. I've seen so many of these because of the heat always present in the fuser. The gear is around $10.00, but you have to remove and take apart the fuser to replace it. Part number for the gear is

LJ7416001, if you want to attempt the repair yourself.

How can I scan files to pdf using Brother MFC-8640D

You will need to open the control center program which is installed when you install the printer on your computer.

Start, all programs, Brother, control center. Click on configuration then scan then file (or which ever you normally scan to). There are two tabs at the top, change the file type at top of each tab to pdf and press ok.

I have a Brother mFC 8640D - paper feeds through

The black exit rollers on top get slick from the paper and toner, they need to be cleaned with a damp rag. You hold the rag against them 1 at a time and open and close the front door so they will rotate while you hold the rag on them. Should help the paper exit.

Clicking noise with MFC-8640D another case

Usually it's because the paper is too tight in the feed tray. The paper length tab on the end away from the feed roller is too tight. If you cant rotate the gear on the paper tray and lift the paper, it's too tight for the machine to lift.

if its going through the drum, then its stopping at the fuser area.

you have a broken gear on the fuser. the fuser will need to be repaired. approx. cost for fuser repair will be about $75.00
