First, do you hear beeps when you press a selection on the screen? If yes, then your speaker is OK and the audio circuits are OK in the unit. Make sure that you have a voice selected in the voice menu. Some units have an audio mixer screen and provide different volume settings for navigation (voice) and system (beeps). maybe the volume for the voice (navigation) is set to off. If you don't hear any beeps when you touch the screen AND you don't hear a voice, make sure that the sound isn't set to be muted. If the sound isn't muted, you may have a defective speaker. For an immediate and quick solution, your best bet is to go to Radio Shack, or hop on eBay, and purchase a car power outlet adapter plug.
Or, alternatively, you can go here on Amazon, and get one for $1.99 (pretty cheap solution if you ask me): http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001MK90HQ/ref=asc_df_B001MK90HQ762845?tag=the004-20&creative=380337&creativeASIN=B001MK90HQ&linkCode=asn
Sounds like the sensitivity is whacked...can you hear the type sound. Mine does this sometimes and I solve it by using 2 thumbs and constantly push the settings icon, on each side. It will bring up the x for sensitivity...using the stylus tap gently and then twice to set. Hope this is what you were looking for.
I have the same problem with my Nuvi 350. It's only about 2 months old and the sound went. I turned it on the other day to use it and the sound did not sound right, it sounded like the speaker was blown. I turned it off and turned it back on and that was it, the sound was gone. I did everything possible and can't get the sound to come back. I called Garmin and now I have to send it in for repair. I looked around the web and noticed that Garmins have big issues with the sound going on the units. I hope they fix that issue.
