Where does it tell you that they are unknown devices? Did you set up the partitions yourself? Are they using NTFS as a file system?

Make SURE you dont' have any data on the drive that is important (or you have a good back up) Click "COmputers" and "manage" you will need to initialize the drive for VIsta to recognize it.

You have to go to control panel, adminstrative tools, storage and initialize the drive. However the way it sounds, the drive might have an issue, could be the cable or the usb port

My vista does nnot recognize one partition on my

1. In the run command (Start menu bar) type "regedit" to bring up the Registry Editor.

2. In Registry Editor, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

3. In the details pane, double-click DevicePath.

4. Add a semi-colon to end of the existing text, and then add the path to %SystemRoot%\System32. The result should be similar to: %SystemRoot%\inf;%SystemRoot%\System32

Do not remove the %SystemRoot%\inf file path from the DevicePath registry entry.

5. Click OK to save the new value, and then close Registry Editor.

6. Delete “INFCACH.1” FROM C:\Windows and C:\Windows\Inf Directories (if it exists)

7. Ensure that there is a copy of the usbstor.inf file in C:\Windows\Inf
If there isn’t – follow the below steps:
a) From another Vista system (copy it out of another Vista system and copy it directly into the C:\Windows\inf directory

OR

b) From the problem machine, run Command Prompt ( as administrator). From C:\ do a dir usbstor.inf /s . Wherever the file is found, go to that directory and copy all the files located in that directory to C:\Windows\inf directory

8. Open device manager, uninstall all unknown devices (right click, uninstall) so they all disappear from the list

9. Reboot the computer

10. Plug the device in (the drivers will now install and the device will be usable!)

USB device not recognized

Hi,
if it,s showing in the device manager as an exclamation mark. that means it,s found it, but can,t recognise it.
i,d suggest formatting and partitioning it, with some good software. also ensure that it,s powered via 2 usb cables to laptop, from 1 on the drive itself. some bigger hard-drives, need the extra power to drive them.

"USB Device Not Recognized" - any usb device

1-Make sure you are using XP SP2. You probably are but just in case....

2-Unplug all USB devices

3-Uninstall any software for the devices you just unplugged

4-Reboot into safe mode and open the device manager. Make sure to choose the show hidden devices option

Note: Follow the order of removal exactly and this MUST be done in safe mode only!

5-Remove any entries for USB peripherals like scanners and printers

6-Remove any entries for HID devices or Combp USB devices

7-Remove all USB root hub entries

8-Remove all USB host controller entries

9-Reboot to normal mode, let Windows reset the USB stack and try your thumb drive.

If this didn't work then repeat steps 1-8.
Staying in safe mode, right click in the device manager and scan for hardware changes. Let Windows reset the USB stack and try your thumb drive again.

Also when doing any of this try and get a hold of another thumb drive and try it instead of yours. Your thumb drive could be the source of the trouble. We had similar issues we tracked down to a bad batch of Memorex thumb drives.
