Generally, a dryer with a turning drum but no heat is caused by one of three or four issues. The first and most common is the thermal fuse. Located near the lint tunnel in the rear, the rear chassis panel with eight screws, needs to be removed to access that device. It looks like a flat white plastic strip with two wires coming from it, usually held in place by one screw and a slot which clamps one end. It blows when heat is exceeded in the lint tunnel. If you just dried a thick blanket, a large load of dense items, such as levi jeans or other items made of heavy fabric, you can count on it. Of all the problems with dryers, 99% are the thermal fuse. Get your machine serial number at the back of the machine and go to your local appliance parts dealer with that info. $15 is the average price of this item and about an hour of disassembly/reassembly of the back panel. Clean out the lint tunnel and lint filter while you're back there! Check the "repairclinic" dot com's site for more insight into your dryer's parts.

I have an old Kenmore 70 Series dryer, just this weekend, the drum turns but no heat..... after a little search online, I suspect the pilot light went out. Where is the pilot light located? I lost the...

The burner is on the lower right side of the bottom under the drum. See this manual pdf page 23 for location and access. https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/4829abde74a34d7f85256ab000620794/$FILE/4322260.pdf

The burner uses an ignitor and a flame sensor vs a pilot light. See this link pages 12 - 14
https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/c5c81d2c8f26b1b5852574f20055c20c/$FILE/4314010.pdf Note the M series burner has been in use since 1984.

The dryer must have a complete termperature circuit and no "high temp limit" failures for the ignitor to light. That means the door is closed, motor is running, and the cycle thermostat is less than 135 deg F and the High limit thermostat is less than 180 deg F just to provide power to the gas valve solenoids, ignitor, and radiant / flame sensor.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

This link will help you in diagnosis/disassembly/parts.

Possibly a faulty heat element is most common failure. Fix the no heat problem and the dryer should shut off ok.
Make sure you have correct voltage to the unit before tearing apart. Again visit the link above

Kenmore 70 Series

The most likely cause is a bad ignitor part number 279311. It has to glow to open the valve and ignite the gas. You should hear a loud click when you first start the dryer. That tells us there is voltage to the gas valve.

Unless the dryer is extremely old, you do not have a standing pilot. It uses and ignitor or glow coil which could be your problem. It could also be defective gas valve coils or an open thermal fuse. Since it is a gas unit, I recommend you call a technician.
