Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

My craftsman 19.5 b&s engine has developed a Rabit jumping problem. becoming more difficult to control the speed with the clutch/brake. I also notice that the internal control when going downhill is not system braking so it allow you to go down hill full speed. is there an adjustment screw? I need to run the trottle fully open when bagging, to run it slower to shoot will get clogged.

I don't know if you have a hydrostatic or gear drive trans, but you should be able to go slower either by shifting to a lower gear or by moving the hydro drive lever to a slower speed. Always run the engine at full speed. Slowing the mower down by slowing the engine is extremely hard on the motor. It need the higher rpm's to keep it cool and not have to work as hard. There is a brake adjustment on the left rear axle. There is a brake disc with lever and a nut holding it on. Turn the nut clockwise about a half turn at a time to adjust the brake and check it. You don't want to get it too tight or it won't roll.

Intermittent starting problem

hav e you checked the brake/ clutch safty switch . you said you looked for the clutch switch not sure if your talking bout the clutch that some models use to engauge the mower deck or if your taking bout the brake/ clutch switch .. either one will cause the rider not to start . your brake/clutch safty switch should be located on the under side of the rider just inside the frame rails very near the brake rod that the brake / clutch pedal is part of .. this is usually a 3 inch or so spring loaded piece usually white in color and will have a piece sticking out if the brake is depressed . " if i remember correctly " . check there these on some are on the same side as the brake / clutch pedal others are on the other side of the rider . i cant remember off the top of my head what side craftsman riders are on for sure .. you cna try to take this off and use electrical contact cleaner on it to clean the terminals in side it , this can be bought from any auto parts store like autozone or napa .. also check your battery i have seen some batteries cause the same issue . you can check the battery by checking the power it has under load with a volt meter set to amps and see what it drops down to ... also another tirck is if you have a battery jump pack also known as jump starters , hook one or even a battery charger to the battery ( charger on 12volt low ) and see if you still have the same starting issue .... last idea is you could have a bad ignition switch after all and its not sending power out every time , i had a issue with my gt where my head lights didnt work and changed out the switch n they work now .. . hope these ideas help if you need any more help just drop me a line ill help best i can ..

When you turn the ignition switch on the car will not turn over. all the lights; radio etc. work. also a square box that sits on the driver side under the hood will tick, while you are trying to start...

Well, you haven't said if its an automatic or 5 speed manual. So lets start here....
Have you tried a jump start? just because your lights are working doesn't mean your starter has enough juice from the battery.
Then, If it's a automatic try this.......
With your foot on the brake and the vehicle in "Neutral" (not park) use you right hand and hold the key all the way in the start position and with the left hand jiggle the shifter up & down from the edges of reverse & drive.
There is a switch called the neutral safety switch that sometimes becomes loose. It is to prevent the vehicle from starting in any gears.
The same with a 5 speed. But that one is on the clutch and sometimes you have to bury your foot to the floor for that one to work. If this is a 5 speed then look on the clutch pedal for a switch with a push button. try that manually with your finger or jump the wire. MAKE SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL WITH THE WHEELS CHOCKED & PARKING BRAKE ON!

Clutch vibration and jerking at slow speeds.

Check the drive belt. It probably has chunks missing or at least has flat spots (narrow spots) that cause the belt to jump every time it goes around a pulley. That will set up a heck of a vibration. Also check the pulleys for free movement. The drive belt is above the blade drive belt....

Craftsman 42 in 19.5 unable to control speed forward motion

is this perhaps a hydro trans? if so, try putting the shift lever in neutral, then let off the brake pedal, use the shift lever to go forward and to neutral to stop - same with reverse, don't even use the brake pedal except for emergency stops. if it's a manual shift, it's possible the belt is incorrect, and/or the belt guides are bent or the belt is improperly routed - the belt guides are important as they allow the belt to "blossom" off the engine pulley, reducing the "shock" load when engaged - hope this helps

Craftsman model 917.272950 lawn tractor won't start

OPERATOR PRESENCE SYSTEM
Be sure operator presence and interlock
systems are working properly, If your
tractor does not function as described,
repair the problem immediately.
• The engine should not start unless the
clutch/brake pedal is fully depressed
and attachement clutch control is in the
disengaged position.
• When the engine is running, any
attempt by the operator to leave the
seat without first setting the parking
brake should shut off the engine.
• When the engine is running and the
attachment clutch is engaged, any
attempt by the operator to leave the
seat should shut off the engine.
• The attachment clutch should never
operate unless the operator is in the
seat.

Check your seat switch and clutch switch wires be sure that the connection to each switch is making contact and the mechanism that activates the switch is actually activateing them in other words be sure the clutch is pushing the switch in and your seat switch is occupied and be sure all grounding wires a intack
especially from your battery negative to the frame. You also could have a neutral safety switch which requires your transmission to be in neural.
try these things and let us know how we can further help from more of your input.

Sears 19 hp twin 42 inch tractor, won't start if hot

Hi
Two things come to mind. First it could be not getting enough fuel when hot due to carb adjustment being too lean. That could be that the float level in the carb is set too low or the low speed jet is set too lean. When cold the choke circuit in the carb supplies the extra fuel required.
Second in some enjines that have low compression they start cold but when hot the compression drops below 60 psi and makes starting very difficult until engine cools down.
I suspect a fuel problem.
