Hey Bruce,
get one of these manuals..they have the wiring diagrams and some troubleshooting tips.. trace the wires using the wiring diagram...take your time.. you CAN figure it out!!!

The neutral lights is not going out until the atv goes into gear. Look over the shift levers and rods that puts the vehicle into gear. Take the shift linkage loose from the engine and see if moves by itself. If all the linkages move except when attached to the engine, then the linkages could be out of adjustment (if it has multiple linkages like 4 drive) or the engine has some internal issues like trans problems or other related to the shifting mechanisms.

When checking for spark at the plug make sure the outer metal part of the sparkplug is grounded to the engine, make sure the main ignition switch is on, make sure the emergency switch on the handle bar is set to the start position and make sure the atv is in neutral.
After checking all these things above and it still fails to fire or spark at the plug then check all or any wiring, wiring connections and or connectors that you have intentionally or unintentionally disconnected while woking on the atv and also check all the fuses.
If all these check out as good and the atv still won't fire at the plug you will need to test other things such as the igntion coil, pickup coil but you will need a volt/ohm meter and the specifications for these in order to test them.

Click on that LINK and download the PDF file to your computer this should provide you with more than enough information to test and find your ATV problem.

Try jumping across the starter soleniod. If that don't start the machine then your starter probably needs to be rebuilt. Rebuild kits can be purchased for about 35 dollars from any motorcycle shop that deals with J&M ATV or Mcdonald ATV. both these places have websites that will tell you where a dealer is near you.

MAKE SURE THAT FORWARD AND REVERSE ARE FULLY ENGAGEING AND DISENGAGING

Have you tried putting the ATV in reverse, drive 5 feet, then put in neutral and disengage the 4x4. I know that has worked with my 660. This has also worked with the diff lock.
