Turntable only playing sound from one speaker.

It could be like you said cartridge (could be a bad connector and cartridge ok) or bad contacts in amp switch try switching it a few times? also check the phono plugs coming out of the turntable sometimes the metal bit breaks off on the centre pin .If you have a multimeter check across the phono plugs to measure cartridge coil resistance both channels should be the same. You could try swapping the leads around and if the sound swaps L/R that would mean fault on turntable no sound would mean one side of amp down.

My DCP501 has no phono input, only tape. How can I connect my turntable to DCP501?

The newer receiver amplifiers have not provided an input for the low voltage phono cartridge, a pre-amp is required that has the proper impedance to match up with the phono cartridges.

The attached photo is an example of one of many that are available sense the old vinyls are coming back.

Hope this helps?

With phono, I only get sound from one speaker, but no problem with tuner. Any ideas?

You can start to troubleshoot the issue.

Change the phono plugs reversing right/left. Does the working speaker change? If yes, problem is in turntable or cartridge. If no, problem is in your receiver.

If the problem is in the turntable or cartridge, pull the cartridge off. Is it directly plugged into the arm, or does it have 4 wires on it? If wires, swap right/left. Change in speaker? No? Problem in turntable wires. Yes? Replace cartridge.

If it's plugged directly into the arm, clean the connections with a pencil eraser (gently). Fixed? No? Try connecting turntable to a different receiver, comment.

What we're trying to do is to isolate where the problem is, so you know what to replace or fix.

Onkyo TX 8020 Receiver sounds muffled. I have the Onkyo TX 80202 receiver and just bought the Audio Technica AT-LP120 turntable to connect to it. I have the turntable switch to "Phono" (so as to make use...

This sounds like a wiring problem. Perhaps a faulty earth connection inside the lead or the plugs to and from the turntable. Also check the connections to the cartridge, they can become loose or be connected wrong. Say a channel to the earth connection.

Very low sound after new needle installed

Firstly the cartridge could be faulty or incorectly wired. I think what you are refering to is a magnetic cartridge pre-amp. If the turnatable has seperate audio connectors these should be plugged into the "phono" socket. And not an "aux" or "CD" input. If there is no phono socket, you wouldn't be able to plug a pre-amp in anyway. Yes the deck if it is built in should have this pre-amp built in. However these pre-amp can fail!
To test if the pre-amp is working, even if has no phono socket, unclip the leads to the cartridge. With your amp on, touch the end of each wire with your finger. On two you should hear a buzz - one for each channel. If it's not loud then there's a problem with the pre-amp. If you do get a decent buzz the cartridge is faulty.
You can also trace the wiring to the pre-amp inside the unit, if you wish to fix it. It will almost certainly end up at an IC, which should be replaced.

I have just fitted a Technics SL BD20 Turntable to my new Panasonic SA-AKX50 system. I can't get much volume out of it when playing a record on the turntable. I have a black wire coming out of the back...

Does your NEW Panasonic SA-AKX50 have an input label "PHONO"? If not, it can't PRE-amplify and RIAA-equalize the tiny voltage signal produced by the phono cartridge.

"PHONO" is the only designated connection on an audio device that is literal and exclusive. Nothing but PHONO will work right on it and old-school turntables would require it to preamplify the tiny current produced by a Phono cartridge.

If your unit doesn't have a PHONO connection you will have to get a Phono Preamp to connect between the TT and any Line Level input, like Aux.

Denon PMA 700 AE maximum phono input signal

Why? Are you contemplating connection of something OTHER THAN A PHONO CARTRIDGE to it?

Be advised, only a phono cartridge should be connected to a Phono input. There's more going on behind it than just voltage step-up.

Phono plays lower in volume than cd and tuner. Sounds ok i guess but is about a quarter to one third lower in volume. Is this normal ? Can I plug phono into cd jacks to check if any better ?

Hello. As per the post before me, if you have a receiver with a Phono input(many receivers don't have one anymore) the output of a phono cartridge is around 30 millivolts, vs 300 millivolts for a CD(10 times the amount) or any other line level device. A Phono preamp, also has RIAA(recording engineering standards)Equalization that provides the proper equalization for a Phono cartridge. As per the other post, yes, it will sound very low, and unnatural sounding. If the input you are plugging the turntable input into, doesn't say Phono, you can purchase an inexpensive Phono preamp made just for this very issue. You can try Radio Shack, or find something of better quality on the Internet.

Phono stage

Hi. The phono input of your STRBD930 has a pre amplifier on it, and as such should only be connected to a dynamic phono cartridge. This is one which has a moving coil or magnet, as opposed to a piezzo cartridge. Connecting a piezzo turn table to the phono input will provide a too-higher voltage input for the pre amp, which might damage the pre amp. I hope this helps. PS moving magnet and moving coil are same difference. These are both dynamic cartridges, and can be connected to STRDB930.

Very low audio output

Make sure your receiver has a PHONO input. If you are connecting it to a LINE or AUX input, then there is not enough signal to boost the sound coming from the turntable. Turntables require a PHONO input, because phono input's have a pre-amp on them, which boost the turntable signal. If you do not have a PHONO input on your receiver, you will need to buy a Phono Pre-Amp.

If you have a phono input, then you might have an issue with the turntable's RCA cables, or your cartridge may be at fault.
