To see if the pilot itself is lit first remove the front cover. Near the bottom left hand side of the cabinet with the cover removed, look just above the burners you will see an oval hole punched out of the front panel. You can look inside the small opening to see if the pilot is burning. You may need to look on a bit of an angle to the left side of the burners and your should see it

Make sure thermostat is set higher than water temperature. Make sure pump is running and water is flowing through unit. If gas valve is not opening then flame sensor or gas valve is bad.

Yes it does. Flame rectification is carried back through the ignitor assembly ground. Be sure all the points of contact are rust free between the ignitor assembly and the chassis.

flame sensor is probably dirty.remove and clean with fine steel wool.it is located near bottom of burner near ignitor

it's possible there is a blockage in one of the lines---those tubes are a very popular place for spiders to build a nest. check especially where you see curves in any of the tubes
