Please find the complete step how to get it connected.

  1. You must obtain an internal hard drive (from now on referred to as an HDD). The first step is to decide on one of the standard physical sizes for any HDD. If you already have a spare HDD laying around for this project, skip to step 3. There are basically 3 HDD sizes: 1.8", 2.5", and 3.5". 1.8" and 2.5" are the standard sizes for laptop HDD's. Laptop HDD's can be powered by the USB cable, so there is no AC adapter needed. Laptop HDD's are however more expensive than internal PC HDD's, so if you are not worried about size or another power cord, a desktop PC HDD may be the way to go.
  2. Choose and purchase a compatible enclosure. Take into consideration the physical size of your HDD, as well as its interface (ATA100, ATA133, Serial ATA150, Serial ATA II, etc.). Decide on a connection type that suits the needs of all computers that will be connected. USB2.0 is currently a good standard, and it will work on any computer or laptop with a free USB connection. FireWire (IEEE1394) is even faster, however it is not as common in all computers yet. Be sure to also compare fan noise levels (if it has a fan, and if the noise level is displayed). For a HDD that will be running whenever your computer is turned on, a fan will be most likely a good thing to have, while HDD's used primarily for backup usually won't need one. Also check to see if there is a power switch on 3.5" enclosures. Without one, you will need to unplug the adapter to power down the drive. For backup this isn't a big deal, but some people using their drive for secondary storage might find it annoying to plug and unplug every time they start and shut down their computers.
  3. Unwrap both your enclosure and HDD.
  4. Follow your instructions on how to correctly open your enclosure.
  5. Set your HDD to the Master setting (or Master/No Slave if one exists). This jumper setting is located between the Molex power connector (4 large round pins) and the ATA/SATA connector. You will see 2 rows of four or five small pins, and a small clip (jumper) connected to 2 of them. Pull out the jumper with a tool such as tweezers or a pencil, and place it in the Master position if it is not already there. A diagram of the different jumper settings can usually be found right on the top label of the HDD.
  6. Connect your enclosure's Molex power connector and ATA/SATA ribbon cable to your HDD. Although it would be very hard to accidentally plug these in upside-down, take a moment to make sure that the ribbon cable and power connector are properly aligned before inserting them.
  7. Screw the HDD into the enclosure. 4 or more screws were supplied with the enclosure. There will be 4 holes, 2 on each side of the HDD, and corresponding holes inside the enclosure.
  8. Take one last look at the inside before you close it. Make sure you did not forget to connect anything. Read your instructions (you HAVE been reading them too, havent you? :) and make sure you covered all of the steps. It will be a pain to open it all over again because you forgot to change the jumper to Master or something.
  9. Close the enclosure.
  10. Connect the power cord (if one is necessary) and the USB or FireWire cord to your drive.
  11. USB and FireWire are Plug-and-Play, meaning that you do not need to turn off the computer before connecting your drive. Connect the other ends of these cords to your computer and surge protector (you ARE using a surge protector, right? :).
  12. Turn your computer on if it is not already. Go to My Computer (or Computer for Windows Vista). It is most likely on your desktop, but can also be found in the Start menu.
  13. You should see a new device in the 'Devices with Removable Storage' section.
  14. Right click on it and select Format (about half way down the list).
  15. Format the drive using NTFS for use in Windows (ext3 is good for Linux) as the File System. To read and write from both Linux and Windows, use fat32. You can give it a Volume Label if you wish. Example: External, Secondary, Backup, etc. Be sure Quick Format is not selected. This will allow any bad sectors to be recognized and to be roped off from any data being stored later on.
  16. Wait for formatting to complete. This may take longer for large drives.

My pc and laptop not detect my Maxtor OneTouch III Mini External 100GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive R01E100 what can i do please help me soon as possible

Good Day Anantsharma8!

If your PC and Laptop can not detect your external hard drive, I do suggest you check its usb cable. A substitute cable will confirm if your current usb cable is faulty or has an open wire.

Most common reason why the external hard drive is not recognize by PC or Laptop is due to loose connection of the hard disk inside the connectors of the enclosure.

Anantsharma8, if you have a small precision screw, I recommend you open the enclosure of the external hard drive. Remove the front face where usb and power plug connects, then slide it out to expose the hard disk also. You will see two connectors. These are the ones that always loosen. Please disconnect both the connectors and then connect it again properly. Put the hard disk back, close the enclosure and try to connect again with your PC or laptop via usb cable.

Good Luck! I hope that it will soon recognize your external hard drive.

No manual - need to know which cables I should have

Without knowing which specific motherboard you have, it's impossible to give specifics, but in general these are the cables you should have coming off your motherboard:

- Either 1 or 2 power cables leading to the power supply, which should be right next to each other.

- A long connector with a cable going to your hard drive. (Unless you have a SCSI or SATA hard drive -- the connector will look different.)

- A similar-looking long connector going to your CD or DVD drive.

- If you have a floppy drive, there will be a cable for that.

- A thin cable leading to the power switch on the front of the case.

- Another thin cable running to the fan. (If you have more than one fan inside your computer, there will be more than one cable.)

If you have USB ports, audio ports, or other ports on the front of your computer, there may be a cable connecting those ports to your motherboard as well.

How to install 2 t hard drive in computer compaq

A 2Tb hard disk will be a SATA hard drive. If your PC Desktop does not have a SATA disk controller then your have a couple of options.

1. Insert a SATA controller card into the PCI expansion slot, mount the SATA hard drive inside the PC case and then connect the SATA hard drive to the controller (you will also need a 4 pin power to SATA adapter cable) and install the SATA controller driver.

2. The other option (and the easiest) is to purchase an external USB 2Tb hard drive. All you need to do is, plug it into the USB port of your computer and it will see it as an external storage device.

Can i install a second hard drive and memory card

Yes this drive will become a slave drive and will need to be connected up to ribbon cable inside computer. There should be a spare connector on one of the cables comming from either cd-rom or the master hard drive... on the back of your new drive there is a small 2 pin connector which if you look onto most drives that u must set it as a slave drive

ESATA Connection problem with My Book & my laptop w/ Vista

Had the same problem with a WD esata 1TB drive and an HP DV6 laptop. Using Vista home premium. Lots of experimentation BIOS settings and driver update, and finally fixed it by trimming back a couple of mm of the plastic shoulders on each connector of the esata cable. A few depth measurements and it became clear that the connectors weren't going in deep enough otherwise. The cable was a Belkin of reasonable quality.

No problems now, but the drive is only recognized if it's connected at boot-up.

The core of the problem is the external casing of both the laptop and the WD drive enclosure. They're thick and keep the cable connector from going in far enough. Perhaps manufacturers of the cables or the esata devices are sloppy, or the standard isn't specified well enough. I've seen pictures of esata cables that have significantly different dept.

I recently purchased an external hard drive, and how do connect it to my computer.

External Hard Drive is mostly of the USB interfacing type. If urs one is the same, then it is just as simple as plugging in a pen drive in the USB port. If it has external power supplies then u can easily figure out how to connect. There are two parts in the power supply (if external power supply cable is provided), 3-pin main power supply connector and other is the adapter which goes to the external hard drive.plug in the other end of the adapter into the hard drive (there is a hole in it). connect the main power cable to the adapter extension. now for the usb Hard Drive, connect the USB cable to the USB port of the computer. Switch on the power supply to the Hard drive and u r ready to use ur brand new External Hard Drive. If it is a Firewire interfacing one then u may need to open the CPU box, and then connect the firewire connector on to the motherboard firewire port. It is easy to identify, it is a red colored port/connector.
