My computer will not boot, what is the problem

I have the EXACT same problem. I have a Gateway desktop, only a few years old. I don't have the model information right now. The problem started about 4 weeks ago and I was able to shut of the power on the power cord, wait a few minutes and try again and after about 5 tries, it would finally boot up. That bandaid stopped working about a week ago and no matter how many times I try, it will not boot up! The fan comes on as if it is working at full speed and the light comes on the computer. The monitor is working because the box with 3 colors pops up, (something about analog), and then goes in to what looks like sleep mode. I checked all cords, they are fine. Nothing looks too dusty. I don't think it overheated because I never left the computer on for more than a couple hours at a time. I didn't add any mods or make any changes at all to the computer before this started happening and have never had any problems with this computer since I bought it until now. What could it be and how can I fix it?

Sounds like the power supply in the computer. You'd have to try substituting another.

Check all the cable connections inside the computer, make sure they are all tight. remove the memories stick and reinsert it. if the machine still will not start. then you have to borrow a hard drive and try with a new hard drive (perfer have operating system installed.)

I have a gateway pc thats about 12 years old.. I have lifetime support for this unit. I am having trouble getting it to boot up.

Time for a new computer

Or-- install whatever parts are needed in the gateway
& load a fresh new version of the Windows Operating System
of your choice Win 7,8 or 10

Forget the warranty & just pay to have it fixed

Gateway computer is stuck in power saving mode.

The Gateway 818GM is a few years old but if - hopefully - the motherboard auto-detects a video card, try removing the MSI MS-8936 video card & swapping over the monitor lead to the other VGA connector fed from the motherboard.

Failing that, if you think it's a faulty video card, they're cheaply available on eBay eg for US$6.70 here:
MSI NVIDIA GeForce MX 4000 MS 8936 64 MB DDR SDRAM AGP 4x 8x Graphics

I have 10 year old gateway desktop, it suddenly woke up one morning & i can only get the gateway logo to come up Help

sounds like the boot file is corrupted or deleted. it may be fixed by shop with the appropriate tools. the file must be replaced and most people do not have access. otherwise you could restore the 'whole' system from backups if you have them or if you created a repair disk
that may work. restoring takes time but its cheaper than a shop doing it or fixing it. good luck

Need 2 add more mem

Hi BBrown,

There is an excellent step-by-step guide here

http://www.computermemoryupgrade.net/installing-laptop-memory.html

However, you NEED to find out what exact model of Gateway laptop you have to make sure that the RAM modules that you buy will work with your laptop since there are physical limitations to make sure you don't install the incorrect types.

For example, there's SDRAM (associated with Pentium III laptops from 10 years ago) and three generations of Dual Data-Rate memory (DDR for short).

DDR3 would be used in current laptops (maybe up to 2 years old), DDR2 (2-6 years old) and of course, Pentium4 era DDR as well,

Hope the helps

About 4 years old, right?
My first test is to dust out the thing and try a new power block. (About $35 if you have to buy one - I have a spare kicking around for this)
If it still fails to turn on AT ALL, it is likely the motherboard
If it boots but does not startup properly, you may have a bad hard drive. See if it will boot to the CDROM (DVDROM)
Bad memory causes the computer to start but emit a series of beeps from the PC speaker.

Motherboard repair follows:
Look for metal cylinders wrapped in plastic (Capacitors). Look at the tops. Are any of them slightly or prominently rounded? These need replacing.
Get an experienced friend who can solder with a GOOD soldering iron. VERY CAREFULLY, replace the capacitors with the correct voltage, value and temperature rating. It is extremely easy to damage the motherboard.
No other reasonable repair for a motherboard.

How to install windows xp. where can I get the required Drivers?

firstly make sure your computer hardware can support xp. get a genuine copy of xp,boot with it and follow the onscreen instructions.make sure you have a backup of your data,as depending on what you choose, there is an option of Formatting the hard disk which erases everything from the computer.

search for your computer model on google or the manufacturers website if you know the manufacturer name.if you give me the exact model and make i might be able to help.

dont forget to backup your data!

My 2 year old out of the box Gateway GT5220 boots up as usual but there is no video signal from the onboard video card. No modifications to this unit at all.

After verifying this issue with a second monitor, it would seem a new video card would be in order. As far as I cant tell this model has built in video, often referred to as integrated. therefore replacing the current video component will not work. You will need to install a PCI-E video card. Often referred to as PCI express. This computer has one slot available for a PCI-E card. If that doesnt solve the issue then the problem extends past simply the video signal.

This might be a heating issue. Considering its 6 years old pop open the case and use dust off and spray it down until there isnt any dust left near, in or around the heat sink. try that and if it doesn't work try re-seating the heat sink on the possessor and clean off all the thermal paste and re apply some new thermal paste.
