Question about Dell Latitude C510 Notebook

1 Answer

Multiple monitor feature

I have a dell latitude c510. each time i start computer it defaults to an incorrect screen resolution. I am able to go into settings and change the resolution to 1024x768 and it corrects but each time i restart I need to repeat. I believe this is due to having 2 monitors installed. I do not use any other monitor but do not know which one to remove correctly. When I go to the device manager it shows 4 default monitors. Any suggestions?

Boot to SAFE mode, go to device manager, remove all Monitors, reboot and let it re-detect. That should resolve you resolution issue.

The screen on my lap top is broken, I would like to hook it up to a monitor but can't get it to display on it ... any suggestions?

If the laptop its self is not damaged, try holding the Fn key and press the F8 key multiple times till you get it to display on the monitor.
The following was copied from the Dell User Manual
"<Fn><F8>" "Switches the video image to the next display option. The options include the integrated display, an external monitor, and both displays simultaneously."
"<Fn><F7>" " Scales between wide-screen and standard aspect ratio video resolutions." page 50 from PDF

Here's the link to the Dell User Manual:

If you get it working on the external monitor, I would update the video driver and the bios. You can get the files from If you are going to update the bios make sure the battery is over 50% charged and the power supply is plugged in to the laptop.
You can check the bios version on a windows computer by typing MSCONFIG32 on the "run" or "search programs and files"

Dell latitude problem!!!!!

The cable connecting the motherboard to the screen might have a few open wire. It's why the problem occur when you move the lid.
download the service manual to have access to this cable (HERE: :
Unwrap very gently the cable from is sticky tape and you should find a dozen of very small wire, one or two might need to be reconnected together.
Or You might also have a problem with the VGA card, in that case your only chance is to find a replacement one on ebay, or if the VGA card is integrated to the motherboard, with it.
You should find all the details on the service manual.
Good luck tell me if it did solve anything, and please rate..

Laptop won't boot (display problems)

If the diagnostics displays on the LCD screen but you get no display when Windows starts to load, it sounds like you have a video software driver problem. Try tapping the F8 key when you power on your laptop and boot in Safe mode. If it works in safe mode then you need to check you driver. You can also try connecting the laptop to an eternal monitor and see what happens.

Dell latitude c510 administrator password

If you're locked out of your computer, you can use a program such as OphCrack to recover passwords for local accounts. The LiveCD is incredibly easy to use, just boot from it and it does everything automatically.

Screen resolution resets to 800x600 after every reboot when d/port is connected.

You may have to set the monitors resolution to match the pc as they may be different.
